Which Computer Degree???
Hey guys!

Well it's about time for me to get my butt back to school...last time I actually took steady classes was back in '95 when I was a business major--YUCK! Anyway, of course now I'm all into computers and want to get my BS in a computer related field. However, I'm not sure which one to focus on. I have to take distance learning classes as there aren't any local classes available to me. I'm looking into the Computer and Information Science field. Whaddya think? I want to do as little programming as possible, so I'm shying away from the standard Computer Science degree where programming seems to be unavoidable. I want to make sure every class I take counts toward my BS...unlike the junk I took many years ago.
I don't see myself staying in the military much longer (I'm so tired of being away from my loved ones), so I want to be prepared for when I make my move toward civilian life.
So whaddya think? I'm sure there are plenty of folks here with experience to share.
Any guidance/feedback you can provide is much appreciated.
Thanks!
Mike

I have graduated from three universities with a degree from each. I have taught physics and mathematics at the university undergraduate and graduate school levels. It took a long time and a lot of hard work to get through the procedure. I don't think that can be avoided.
Your requests are a puzzle to me. There is no easy route to an education and you seem to be looking for the easiest and fastest way to a degree. It does not exist, unless you enroll in a mail order course of some sort and take your chances with the quality of the institution.
If you are catalog shopping for a major then, best of luck. You probably won't find whatever you are looking for. If you think you have found it, you are bound to fail without personal motivation. Sorry for the pessimism, but lol. I don't enjoy pissing on your parade.

I'm not "going" anywhere...all online courses, University of Maryland is one of more readily available universities according to my education office here in England.
How long? Well, I plan on taking 2 online courses at a time every term...so pretty much the entire time I have left here (about 2 1/2 years). I already have just about all of my electives taken care of, so I only need to focus on the core classes of whichever field of study I select.
What am I wanting to have? Hmm...I'm not sure exactly because I've never had any computer classes before, with the exception of Java programming. However, that was enough to make me realize that I'm not the programmer type...I mean, I aced the class, but I really didn't enjoy it much.

Maybe folks like Whir, Vass and Rob can give you a hand on this.

August 10th, 2004, 06:38 PM #10Yeah, I have noticed that...but it seems that the Info Science degree has the least amount...if you look at the Breadth Courses in the link I provided, I don't have to take any programming classes at all. I'm just wondering if a degree of this kind is worth anything in the "outside" world. I remember seeing a guy here posting about his IS degree, but I can't find the thread.

I am just about finishing up my bachelors in CIS. Taking Decision Support Systems online in March and I will be done. I am currently going to Post University in CT. They have the best online program in the state, but most of my classes I have taken in the classroom. I did study Computer Science for one semester in Boston at Wentworth University. I am really not into just programming, so I didn't continue with that. I don't mind a little of it, but doing it all the time would drive me insane. I really enjoyed going to school for CIS, and found it very informative. There is always a whole lot more to learn that what they teach you in class. Any other questions let me know. email me at jscarrozzo@comcast.net Hopefully that helped you.
