Well you will want to lean computers first. I suggest going to the library and looking to see if they have any A+ books. They usually have computer books laying around.
This thread has nothing to do with linux or unix so i moved it to a proper section

Library should be free, so why would your Mum object?

You can learn all sorts of stuff for free, before you have to do anything about paying for certs etc.
Good luck.
Cheers

If you're looking for basic computer stuff, then the A+ is a great way to start. Don't get overwhelmed by the amount of books, and how large some of em' are. Once you get going, you shouldn't have any problem jumping right in.
I highly recommend the A+, at least if nothing else than a place to start. Some people discredit the certification, but you'll usually find that those are the people that don't have it in the first place.
Even if you don't go all the way to the cert, then try to take as much away from it as possible. A+ has some pretty decent basic ideas on what makes computers work. Once you finish that one, then CompTIA (The same guys that put together the A+) have a Network+ that you can get into.
I wish you the best of luck. - Hopefully nobody gets in the way of your dreams -And thus it was spoken by the mighty Uss. And it was so.
