Cisco certifications
I know there is a couple of members who are looking into getting their CCNA or other higher up Cisco certifications.
Im currently looking over the materials for the CCNP the problem is lab equipment isnt cheap espically with the updated test.
Someone pointed me to this software which looks interesting
http://www.internetworkexpert.com/resources/iosonpc.htm
Im gonna try to set this up tonight or tomorrow!
This is the first test im working on right now

I hadn't even seen this thread until just now.
Sorry for my lack of "absence" from the forums here. Been kinda' busy jumpin' around, and life gets in the way alot (sounds like you've been busy lately too). Got my final CCNP test on Friday (23 Dec, the ONT)... And I'm expecting to pass to get that cert finally under the belt.
GZ3, If you're looking for the real thing, I'd like to recommend http://www.ciscokits.com.... Don't worry, I'm in no way affiliated with the guys that run that site. :P Like you said, the kits aren't exactly cheap... And the setup I bought back in the summer cost about a grand. - But it was worth EVERY penny. Having the real thing definately makes the difference.
It really is the same kind of difference as driving a car in a video game or one in real life.
Not sure if you finished it already - but have no fear (from what I've done so far) the BSCI is the toughest of all the CCNP tests, took me a couple tries to get through it finally. Once you get past that one, it really is smooth sailing through the rest of the courseware. And thus it was spoken by the mighty Uss. And it was so.

the real thing is the best, and you can always sell it all when your done, I got a couple 2500's on ebay, and then I got one of those small kits from that place usslindstom linked to,
i'm still working on my ccna,

Thanks for the suggestion USS!
Ill check out some of those kits and im still working on the BSCI so you aren't late at all. Ive been studying some of the stuff off and on. What im really worried about mainly is IPv6. Seems really intense!
I hope your exam went well!

Bingo!
CCNP at last!
---------------
Not to beat a dead horse into the ground, but picking up my own equipment was the end to meet all ends.
That being said, no matter how much equipment you throw into the mix, both BGP and ISIS are a whole different ball game that you won't get much done without a simulator. I guess that's why they were a bit rough around the edges IMO to get through the BSCI.
GZ3, also - if you have time - you should check out the video series from CBTNuggets by Jeremy Cioara. He is nothing short of genious, and the videos are ALL very entertaining, as opposed to alot of the "Wonder Years" science teachers that drone on and on reading que cards.
It can get REALLY pricey - but out of all the money I poured into it at this point - I finally landed on ciscokits.com and the cbtnuggets pack... Which guided me all the way to the finish line.
If you have the time, I TRUELY recommend the videos, and if you can afford it, then the equipment.
---------------
Up next, at least in my certification war, is back on the MS horse. Time to upgrade MCSE to the latest and greatest now that Serv08 is right around the corner.
I really do HATE the leap-frog certification game that we always gotta' do, but these things are so friggen addictive, it's hard to stop. And thus it was spoken by the mighty Uss. And it was so.

GZ3, YGPM.

Most of the Router sims WON'T do any BGP or ISIS commands or do what they should with Wildcards. I know with some I've even had trouble with Just Router RIP and EIGRP.
So I'd watch for that. If you can pick what kind of Router you get I would suggest a set of 2600s. In the classroom I'm in we use mostly 2621s and 2620s. You can't go wrong with them, and I know most large companies will let those go cheap because they think they are outdated or they are going bigger with some 7000s.
Just my two cents, and grats on your CCNP uss!! I'm working on mine right now!2.8Ghz Celeron D OCed to 3.4

What does ignorance of god have to do with anything....???
I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

Good luck GZ!! Man, you are moving thorugh the Cisco world. I still haven't taken my first test for CCNA
.
Keep us all informed. Are you practicing with equipment at work or have you bought some for home?

Yep! I saw the new CCNA Flavors out there. I believe you have to get CCNA completed before being allowed to attempt them. I'm not sure why they are doing the specializations at the CCNA level though...sounds like they should have kept it at the Professional and Expert levels.
Thanks for the link...I'm downloading now and will again when I get home from work. I've got Packet Tracer installed, but haven't done much with it since I've takena little break on the cisco studying...I'm about to get back in gear and git'r done though.

Woa - long time no see.
I've been on haiatus from TechIMO for a bit due to having a couple different IT positions. - And boy do they wear ya' out!
C O N G R A T S on the BSCI GZ3.
I think you'll find that's definately the TOUGHEST of all the CCNP exams, and the rest are actually pretty easy in comparison.
It's nice to hear that cert is in reach for ya. - But don't think you're gonna' be getting a break immediately after you get it either, as you're gonna' be my study partner for CCIE.
And thus it was spoken by the mighty Uss. And it was so.
