I hadn't even seen this thread until just now.
Sorry for my lack of "absence" from the forums here. Been kinda' busy jumpin' around, and life gets in the way alot (sounds like you've been busy lately too). Got my final CCNP test on Friday (23 Dec, the ONT)... And I'm expecting to pass to get that cert finally under the belt.
GZ3, If you're looking for the real thing, I'd like to recommend http://www.ciscokits.com.... Don't worry, I'm in no way affiliated with the guys that run that site. :P Like you said, the kits aren't exactly cheap... And the setup I bought back in the summer cost about a grand. - But it was worth EVERY penny. Having the real thing definately makes the difference.
It really is the same kind of difference as driving a car in a video game or one in real life.
Not sure if you finished it already - but have no fear (from what I've done so far) the BSCI is the toughest of all the CCNP tests, took me a couple tries to get through it finally. Once you get past that one, it really is smooth sailing through the rest of the courseware.

I hope your exam went well! |

Bingo!
CCNP at last!
---------------
Not to beat a dead horse into the ground, but picking up my own equipment was the end to meet all ends.
That being said, no matter how much equipment you throw into the mix, both BGP and ISIS are a whole different ball game that you won't get much done without a simulator. I guess that's why they were a bit rough around the edges IMO to get through the BSCI.
GZ3, also - if you have time - you should check out the video series from CBTNuggets by Jeremy Cioara. He is nothing short of genious, and the videos are ALL very entertaining, as opposed to alot of the "Wonder Years" science teachers that drone on and on reading que cards.
It can get REALLY pricey - but out of all the money I poured into it at this point - I finally landed on ciscokits.com and the cbtnuggets pack... Which guided me all the way to the finish line.
If you have the time, I TRUELY recommend the videos, and if you can afford it, then the equipment.
---------------
Up next, at least in my certification war, is back on the MS horse. Time to upgrade MCSE to the latest and greatest now that Serv08 is right around the corner.
I really do HATE the leap-frog certification game that we always gotta' do, but these things are so friggen addictive, it's hard to stop. |

Most of the Router sims WON'T do any BGP or ISIS commands or do what they should with Wildcards. I know with some I've even had trouble with Just Router RIP and EIGRP.
So I'd watch for that. If you can pick what kind of Router you get I would suggest a set of 2600s. In the classroom I'm in we use mostly 2621s and 2620s. You can't go wrong with them, and I know most large companies will let those go cheap because they think they are outdated or they are going bigger with some 7000s.
Just my two cents, and grats on your CCNP uss!! I'm working on mine right now!
