    70-270 VS 70-271

I was looking online trying to figure out which certs i need to study for and i thought i was reading this wrong so i figure i would ask for folks who might have taken all three or know someone.

70-270 is Installing, Configuring, and Administrating XP Pro

70-271 is Supporting Users and Troubleshooting XP

When i look at the MS site for each, although they use different wording and labels, they appear to be the same core ideas and concepts. If i am studying for 270, would i have enough knowledge to pass 271?

70-270 exam is more for the person who will be rolling out XP Enterprise wide and for those who are going to dig deep into the OS to customize and figure out problems.

70-271 is just one part of the exam to get your MCDST (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician). It is more guaged for the Help Desk person and answering a lot of How To's from users. Together with 70-272, it will earn you the MCDST certification.

70-270 is required for MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) and MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer). It goes more in depth and doesn't really focus on the day to day stuff people use and know about XP.

70-271 is not required and can only be used as an elective when combined with 70-272 for MCSA and MCSE.

To answer your question, yes, studying 70-270 will be overkill for the 70-271, but I think the only thing it will be missing is the "High Level" troubleshooting and custer service/Help desk material that is covered in the MCDST track (271,272).

My boss wants to me get a cert by the end of the year, anything really. So i figured i didnt want to get something that isnt really going anywhere or doesnt build up to something.

I figured study for 70.270 and if i cant hack that in time settle for MCDST. I guess i should figure out what im doing since time is running out.

    Unhappy 70-270 Training Kit problem

    Hi Nemo,

I hope you can advise me on this problem. I have installed that Training Kit of 70 -270 on my laptop, and since then I lost total network connection.
When I tried to check the ip configuration on my laptop, I only got "Windows IP configuration" as result. No mac address, ip address, standard gateway, dhcp, dns etc.
So I tried to uninstall the so-called Windows XP Evaluation Software, but it looks like I cannot get rid off it! Even when I tried to uninstall that evolution version by reinstalling the previously WindowsXP system..
Did you also used the Microsoft Press study guide and experienced any setup problems?

    Help!!

To answer your question, no i didnt use any training materials from Microsoft.

I would recommend trying a few other sections as this is for educational and certification questions and not tech support. Honestly, since i dont know what software you installed nor do i know what it did ... its hard for me to give you any advise. Check your network connections and make sure that your set for DHCP and start reading any material you have to help you troubleshoot.
