| Cisco or Linux/Unix Option?
I have a choice between these 2 options. What is the difference and which would be the better choice of outcome?
P.S. For some reason i looked online and I am set for Network Specialist Diploma not degree. Is their a big difference between these two? |

Cisco is going to do you well in a larger company that is looking for a Cisco specialist and thats all your going to work on; firewalls, routers, and wireless devices.
*NIX is going to do you well for any range of company that uses any sort of server running that type of OS. Not everyone is a Microsoft shop with Exchange, so if you learn a Unix flavor of mail server your good to go for instance.
Both are semi-specialized so it really depends on what your doing and what you want to do. |

Actually Cisco newest callmanager runs on some form of linux/unix. (you don't really do much with it since its managed by a web interface)
Cisco is moving pushing more towards Video, Voice, SAN, and virtualization. Add on top the security you learn with Cisco. Cisco has its hands in other technology and is always purchasing new small technology companies.
Like Nemo said, it all depends on what your interest is. |

Linux would be server application/database/scripting/managing.
Cisco is pretty much just networking. |

You know what i totally didnt think about is that Cisco has had a long line of IP phones and is really getting into VOIP as well. They do have their fingers in many different aspects of anything that might go through their networks. |

Some kind of video conferencing i saw that they showed in Orlando over the summer. It was pretty bad ass (i think it something dealing with moving calls from the cisco video to the iphone and back) It was pretty interesting. Plus as of right now, i believe cisco is the only one with a vpn client for the iphone/itouch |
