Certifications for Telecom/ IT Managers

I am relatively new to the forum and have some questions about certifications that potential employers desire from telecom/ IT managerial candidates. I have over 15 years experience in the field, mostly in the military and have a degree in technical management from Kansas State University. I’m thinking about Project Management from PMI or some Microsoft Certifications, but wanted to poll the forum and see what other certifications would set me apart from the competition when I start looking for a job in the corporate world in a few months. Thanks for your input.

Well MS certs aren't going to set you apart from the competition those are a dime a dozen these days. What field in IT do you have experience in? What were you primarily doing?

I've been working in most information assurance and system integration, with the occasional project management role. I have training in networking and LAN administration, but have never played the LAN admin role, and ready don't care too much about it. Since i'm more a fan of unix and sun systems. I'm more a systems and security guy. I've been thinking about doing the Network+/ Security+ certifications, but it just seems like everyone is looking for MCSE and CCNP. Right now my current position is more a managerial/ advising role in a totally unrelated field.

And are you looking to continue with the systems/security gig or manage the people who do it?

Im not sure of a degree off hand, but getting the N+ and Security+ is a good start for what you want to do. Since you want to do security maybe look at the CISSP?
