    New here, need advice

    Hello all,

I currently work a tech support position with a large company and they use Citrix. I'm going to school for IT but was recently told about certifications and such.

My question is would getting certifications in citrix be a good idea to help me move up with the company, or are certs even worth it?

If it is worth it, where should I start with getting certified?

Well if you are wanting to stay in Citrix they have certifications on it:

    Certifications - Citrix Education

I guess the question is what are you interested in?

ps I moved this to the certification/education section

To think about is that once you start getting certs, you're likely going to head down a defined path of specialization, meaning once you get there, getting into other topic areas will likely mean a step down in pay, etc.
So I think the question should really be whether you like what you're doing for work now. If you can see yourself doing the same thing 5 years from now, go for it. If not, then consider your options.

As Philosophizer noted, you generally tend to start somewhere and end up down a path that specializes in something.

For instance, you get your A+ and maybe you start working on some Citrix certs. As they do not specifically require any special certs to start, you may start working that path and pickup server admin certs along the way. Next thing you know, your a Citrix Administrator!

All a matter of figuring out what you want to do though.

    Thanks for the replies

Yes this is something I want to do in 5 years, so being specialized in a certain thing doesn't bother me.

I'm interested in handling systems and servers and solving the problems that go along with them.

As a tech support agent I already do that on a small scale not really dealing with systems directly. This will be taking it several steps farther and actually managing the systems many agents use everyday.

So thanks for the tips guys, I will definately look into this and try to get certified.

One reason I want to do this though, may be a bad reason but I have another year and a half in school and waiting for the degree is almost gut-wrenching right now, I want to get my foot in the door and this seems like a good way to do it.
