I dont understand binary or hexidecimal code yet does anyone have a simple way to explain it or a web site to point me to? How can 1111 add up to 15 in binary?

think of each character space of a box. the right most box is the '1' box, the second to right is the '2' box, the third the '4' box, the fourth the '8' box, and each box after that is just 2x the one to its right. now, if that box is filled (a 1 in that place) then you add the boxes numbers together. so since the 1, 2, 4, and 8 boxes are filled, you get 15.

but that was my logical explaination, there are TONS of websites that will do the work for you. try www.google.com

I knew there was a cert exam behind this somewhere. When I first had to learn this it was aweful. Then, I found a page that just made it click. I wish I knew where that page is.

Basically, you have to have it presented to you in a way that seems natural to you. I wish I had a better answer, but don't kill yourself on trying to understand one page. Keep looking at them and one will make that lightbulb come on and it will all make sense.

There are methods that allow subnetting with neither binary nor calculators.
