can you be a good person and (zenophobe, homophobe, anti muslim, anti semite)
is it possible to be a good person and have faults
Can you be a good person and be a racist, nationalist, bigot, zenophobe, homophobe... (you name the fault)
Especially if never exposed to your hated group or idea.
In other words is Sargent Wallowitz a bad man if he is likely to attack a gay if he feels threatened? regardless of (the fact he is a good leader, good lover, good dad, good husband and wonderful role model in all other categories)
As long as he is not thrust into close quarters with a homosexual he would never ever do anything wrong.
Is he a bad person for being homophobic even though he has never shown any signs of the potential problem that festers below the surface

no, but you can tell me who you think is a good person^^
EDIT, bah editing posts epidemic is evil ;P
as long as the hatred is justified, like hatred against murders because they kill, i dont think that's a fault, but if it's just pure instinct (basic) thinking like, uh i hate homosexuals because they are homosexuals!! then i think it's a big flaw and shouldnt be tolerated. and the argument it's against god's will isnt really working here either (maybe for some religious guys here but well as you may or may not know i think religion is a big flaw too ;p)
same thing happened with black people back in america, and jews in NAZI germany, were those people good who did this? i doubt it
no one can be "good" and have a flaw

It's all a matter of balance, isn't it? Hitler was a vegetarian, a non-smoker, and he loved dogs. But those didn't add up to enough to make him a good person, all things considered.

If it's not possible to be a good person and have faults....then there are no good people.
In otherwords, having faults is human nature, there is no such thing as a perfect human being.BBA

I do not really know what to say about this one. The way it is worded makes it kind of hard to go one direction. Everyone has faults, and I think that everyone can agree on that. But hating someone over race, sexual preference, religion, or handicap is crossing the line. But that is just on the surface. It is a lot more complicated issue than that if you delve deep enough into it.

The genesis of this thread is more sinister than stated.
Don't ask don't tell policy I feel keeps people from stupidly ruining their lives and the lives of others. It is a required evil for our society for this day and age.
I can not stomach the idea of an otherwise good person getting in trouble because the military put him in a situation he could not handle to satisfy a fringe group. I guess it is the same argument used during military segregation and simply forcing the issue will clear it up after only a few hundred peoples lives are ruined.

I am kind of at odds with this one. I find Homosexuality creepy on the one hand and have to fight my own nature to be accepting. I had to do some research in college on homosexuality in abnormal psych to support my arguement that it belonged in the catagory of abnormal psych. I found out that many of my preconcieved ideas about the existence of homosexuality in the animal kingdom were false, in that it does exist (I believed that it did not). I also believed that it was always a choice (most of the time it is not). I still believe that it is an abboration, and admittedly find it disgusting, but then I am heterosexual and as far as I know they feel the same way. Would I go around kicking the crap out of some gays just because they are gay? No.
I would have no problem working with them and in fact have several times in the past and really there is no difference. I mean come on, if one looks at my ass it is not like it is going to suddenly turn me gay, and I am not going to obsess on what this guy is fantasizing about because it is not worth my time.
[train of thought derails]
I once knew this guy who would get drunk with his buddies then go out with baseball bats beating the crap out of any "fags" they could find. He disapeard one day and showed up about 3 years later. He told me he was going to AA and had to apologise to all the people he hurt as part of the program. He told me it was hard to do that because alot of the gays would not accept his apology. He said that because he was gay his actions were considered a cardinal sin by some. He said that at least one of the guys he ran with also came out of the closet. It makes me wonder about people who express violent tendencies towards gays.[/train of thought derails]I get all my News from FNC and right blogs, so I know I am fair and balanced.
