With religion slowly falling from grace in the states I guess religiously based organisations have to seek help from the public coffers to survive. Quote:
When a religion is good, I conceive it will support itself; and when it does not support itself, and God does not take care to support it so that its professors are obliged to call for help of the civil power, 'tis a sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one.

You mean, Faith based initiatives are a sneaky way the Bush Admin tries to fund primarily Christian religious groups.
The New York Times has a list of Faith Based earmarks. This article Fred has brought to our attention is nothing new. Quote:
Religious Earmarks
The list of faith-based earmarks is based on a New York Times analysis of the Congressional Record. The Times examined legislation enacted from 1989 to 200[7], and all conference reports attached to appropriations legislation from 1997 to 200[7], the span searchable at the Library of Congress' web site. The examination employed more than 100 search terms associated with religion. The list may not include earmarks to religious groups and institutions whose names do not reflect their religious affiliations.

As for your article MTA on the Pew Research publication, heres the actual publication link, http://pewresearch.org/pubs/743/united-states-religion
And here's another opinion of what it all means. America: slouching towards the Enlightenment
Reading the references to the Catholic Church, I can see why the Catholic Church has setup a Rat Line depot assisting illegals on their quest to get into the States. They need to keep their numbers up. |

You can make a lot of arguments of why it shouldn't be done, but the people targeted by this are young people who are likely to be heading for jail.
What ever it takes to turn "as risk" kids and twenty somethings around is money worth spending.
I guess there is theory and principle versus end results of grasping at anything that reduced crime and prison populations.

The story of Pinocchio is a lesson in learning right from wrong without the inclusion of religion. Now if religious organisations can find a way of teaching right from wrong without pushing faith they would get the money. It's that little additional of proselytization that is against the grain. The Salvation Army gets money for their strictly secular services only because of the lack of proselytization within those services. Of course now they want to be immunity from being taken to task for discriminatory hiring practices within their secular missions so they may be in for a bit of trouble. |
