In the pre-1930s era, we had robber-barons whose disdain for any form of regulation and unions brought us a period where most people just hung on while those at the top made obscene fortunes. It eventually led to the Great Depression, which was the great awakening for many who then rejected the conservative philosophy.
Government regulation, the labor movement and liberal programs such as the GI bill ushered in unprecedented gains for common people for an two generations.
We're now in a period where conservative anti-government policies have been prevalent for two decades causing the middle-class to shrink and widen the spread between the wealthy and the poor. Once again America is awakening to the myth that conservative policies help everyone and government is the enemy.
I think we are on the verge of a political re-alignment that will last for decades.

I would guess that about 25% of each party is made up of idiots. No real need to go digging any further...

I think we are on the verge of a political re-alignment that will last for decades. | A liberal in the '30s is a conservative today. It's all relative. Bring back WW2 policy, and I'd have no qualms. Small and responsible government, strong manufacturing sector, strong economy, little/no debt, etc.
The whole climate is changed. It's as if everything that was done to make us the best country in the world was disregarded. People got complacent. I guess they thought the gravy train would never end; that there's so much wealth to go around they can start up bullshit programs and just forget about state power. Now there's no such thing as a conservative in Washington - everyone is just a closet progressive, which is ironic since progressivism is just going to regress this country back to the Great Depression.
