Serving your Country

If personal responsibility is something the Republicans believe in, why is community service so funny?

Is it only funny to people that have disdain toward poor people that are trapped in inner cities or does the whole party think that helping the poor is laughable?

It is only funny to those that live in another world and ignore the suffering in our society.
What is so funny about helping people help themselves?
Why do the Republicans scoff at people that try to help the poor help themselves?
Several of the key speakers acted like community service is dishonorable way to serve your country.

Why?
I think Jon Stewart summed this whole thing up very nicely.

Seems a bit general. I am a Republican & I have donated approximately $5000 to local charities each of the last 5 years.

My preference is to give to the local charities who then give to the people in need instead of letting the federal government decide what is best for my unfortunate neighbors. Once my taxes go up to support bloated federal programs, my donations will be reduced because it will impact my budget.

P.S. A note to Surreal... I have a brother-in-law who has lived on the streets of Pontiac for the last 10 years (I have never met him). He refuses to accept shelter or money from the family because he is stubborn. If it weren't for local programs in S.E. Michigan, I'm sure he would be dead by now.

And if it weren't for those people that work in the community, serving the community those programs wouldn't be there. Yet Giuliani and Palin scoffed at their work when they spoke at the convention and the crowd loved it.

Surreal,

I grew up in the projects of Chicago,(you know the place "Good Times" was about). I find it amazing how often I see people who think they know the poor and suffering in this country.

During my delightful upbringing in the projects I remember a time when my sisters and I hid in the back corner of a bedroom when my mother was beaten and raped. I definitely remember being hungry most of the time. I remember my mother being murdered there during my first year in college. I worked for an academic scholarship and received one. On my application I did not check a box in the race part. If I had I would have been guaranteed a scholarship.

Liberalism as it pertains to Blacks is the worse thing that could of happened to my people. I have found liberals to be the most racists people I have had to deal with.

I applied for ROTC after my first year in college and was immediately accepted. I followed what John McCain talks about now, serving something greater than myself.

During my time in service I provided the money that moved my Aunt and 2 sisters out of the projects into a small but nice 2 bedroom home. I have put both of my sisters through college.

This is by my own merits and not because of a liberal program that would have enslaved me to poverty.

What I have asked and many blacks ask is for you liberals to remove the barriers and then get the hell out of our way.

Give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

This black woman will tell you to get the hell out of the way of school vouchers. Let us pick the schools for our children.

THAT WILL GET MANY OUT OF THE GHETTO.

I am sick of liberal excuses saying fine black children should continue to suffer in the worst way (being kept ignorant). Damned to the worst and most violent schools in the country.

I am sick of liberals calling republicans racists, honey you do not know what a racist really is.

As you would find, Michele Obama has had to put up with the same stealth racism I have had to and she has spoke out about it.

She did not get there by her own merits or poor black woman needs our special help.

I have a finger pointed right at you and I say to you, "You have no idea how ignorant you sound to me in this thread you posted".

Time for you liberals to wake up to the fact that you have caused irreparable damage to a few generations of blacks in America.

surreal you probably have seen the segment about hypocracy, 3rd september i think, it shows exactly what most of the people are, as long as it fits their point of view they agree, it gets worse if they actually believe in it

the best example is o'reilly, he spins everything the way he wants it to be, he says, it's a personally matter that bristol is pregnant and it's ok if they handle it. but then he was all over britneys sister who was pregnant the exact same way.

it's just insane

It's not insanity. It's politics as usual.

Yes it is crazy! However both sides do it, its just not a republican thing or a democrat thing. All parties, groups of people, tribes, etc do it.

A Christian caller to NPR this morning upset with all of the "Community Organizer" bashing at the RNC made a very good point. Jesus Christ was a community organizer, Pontius Pilate was a governor.

I don't get that either. Republicans often cite how religious they are, how important God is as a driving force. Yet, they don't support social programs to help poor people. Christian-saint Bush let the New Orleans poor rot and die for a week during Katrina. Universal health care like they have in France and Canada, quality low cost or no cost care for all, is of no concern to the republican party.

They pick and choose bits of the bible and Christianity to use when it helps their agenda, like with trying to block homosexual marriage. They also sit idle as the polar bear and countless other species die (indeed, even mocking environmentalists as in Palin's speech), so that we can just keep burning oil and pumping out CO2 in droves like ignorant lemmings, instead of protecting those creatures and the Earth that we inherited. None of that jives with being a good Christian. None of it. Their attitude seems like a Godless, self absorbed "me" fest.

It just seems to me like fear, racism, bigotry, the view that only humans deserve to live (no other species), and a selfish "me" attitude, guide them, not God. And the view that their way, their chosen views on ethics and morals, are superior to liberal heathens, and must be rammed down the throats of everyone who lives in this country for the greater good, so they think.
