'Reason's Greetings'
And the march goes on. . .
Late next month, atheists, humanists, freethinkers, secularists -- in short, nonbelievers of every description -- will gather in dozens of cities to mark the holiday they call HumanLight.
I really wish they would just get their own holiday instead of using ours.
**Yes, I know they claim that HumanLight is Dec 23. How many people here believe it just accidentally falls 2 days before the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ??They say technology slows down for no one. I know it outruns my wallet. I figure its because my wallet isn't light enough yet.

In their defense, that is a common tactic: putting your own holiday over someone else's. Actually, many people believe that Christmas is on Dec. 25th to coincide with a Roman celebration: Sol Invictus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Do I personally find it disrespectful? Sure, but no more disrespectful than the commercial holiday Christmas is already... Do I fault them for trying? Not at all. When you think that your beliefs are true, why wouldn't you try to share them with everyone... Granted if a Christian tries to share his faith he is a bigot and pushy, but if an atheist tries to share his faith (or lack thereof), he is merely being genuine and sincere...

Rant on:
I don't see anything wrong them setting up their own holiday in the holiday season. How is it using "yours". That sounds like a child fighting over a toy.
You know what's a joke? What Christmas has become in recent years. VERY FEW people actually celebrate the true meaning of it. It is now just a marketing ploy that comes earlier and earlier every year with toys on the shelves and music playing in early october.
I've got zero problem with religion as long as it's not shoved in my face, just as I have no problem with any one opinions on what does and does not exist. Again, as long as it's not shoved in my face.
Let them have their holiday, just as you guys celebrate yours. Why does everything always have to be pointing and shouting? Maybe they just want a holiday to celebrate of their own, that supports their ideologies so they don't feel like outcasts which non-believers always seem to be portrayed as.

Actually the fight over Chrtistmas was won a long time ago by the secularists. It's for everyone to celebrate in their own way. It is not legally considered a religious holiday at present.
When those who believe in any of the available gods understand why they deny all other gods, they should come to understand why atheists lack a belief in theirs.

Tony, I think Zen was asknig if there are any "legal religious holidays" as per Beemers comment.
I don't know if there is a list of government recognized religious holidays. Anyway, what holiday IS still celebrating its original purpose (as celebrated by the majority of people). Veteran's Day is probably the closest, but even then most people don't "celebrate" it, they just watch a parade because it is going down their street. Christmas has it's Santa, Easter has it's bunny, even Thanksgiving is 99% about Food and Football (sure, we might be thankful for those things, but it isn't the focus anymore). This happens in strictly religious holidays too (I recently went to a Diwali celebration that had a fashion show and dance performances, with only one mention of the victory of good over evil, and that was when they mentioned it in passing in a prayer).
Personally, I thin both the secular and religious sides of holidays should be observed, but don't blame others for observing just the secular side or in this case making their own religious side to it.I don't like signatures.

I'm surprised that the homosexual community hasn't come up with their own holiday yet.
We have Kwanzaa, HumanLight, Festivus. What's next?Unofficial TechIMO record holder for the number of times being added and removed from beemer's ignore list.

And on that note, don't miss A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All Sunday on Comedy Central =)
Stephen Colbert: Another Christmas Song (Audio)Ho! It's another Christmas song
Whoa! Get ready brother for another Christmas song
They play for a month, Ad infinitum
One day it struck me someone must write 'em
So! It's another Christmas song
Santa clause singing on naughty snow
Reindeer ringing in the mistletoe
The manger's on fire,
The holly's a-glow
Hear the baby Jesus cryin' ho ho ho

Yes Surreal, there have been a lot of questions about when he was actually born - heck the "scholars" cant even agree on the year.
Since there has been no convincing proof of exactly when, I think the most likely reason is that the early Church simply added 9 months to the March 25th date(most commonly accepted date of His conception). While it has been suggested that the Church decided use Sol Invictus in Christianities early days to give it legitimacy as Christs' birth date I dont think that is true. there is evidence that Christs birthday was celebrated before the Sol Invictus celebrations.
Anyway, it seems no one really cares about my point-that the only way anyone would care about Kwanzaa, HumanLight, Festivus, etc, it because it is happens when Christmas happens. About the only thing we really agree with is that Christmas holiday(or the Kwanzaa, HumanLight, Festivus holiday whatever you call it) have been so heavily commercialized the any real meaning has been lost. They say technology slows down for no one. I know it outruns my wallet. I figure its because my wallet isn't light enough yet.

You seem to have had a problem pointing it out though.

I'll keep on liking the christmas holiday as long as my work keeps giving me a christmas bonus.
And if they want to start giving me a HumanLight bonus, then I will like that holiday as well.

I've always felt there was a "legal bubble" developing. The government is running trials up into the millions of dollars just the keep federal lawyers busy.
