Should they fell this tree?

It seems a controversy is brewing over whether they should fell a tree to make a roundabout in Poland:
Quote:
Polish city ravaged by Nazis to cut Hitler's tree

By MONIKA SCISLOWSKA – 1 day ago

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The towering tree is believed to have been Adolf Hitler's gift to the occupied town of Jaslo — planted to the sound of a Nazi band during World War II.

Town authorities now want it cut down and burned to make way for a new roundabout. But some residents have become attached to the 40-foot (12-meter) oak and are lobbying to save it.

"The tree has not hurt anyone and is not guilty of anything," protest organizer Kazimierz Polak said, adding that his group was appealing to local and regional authorities to preserve the tree. "It is growing healthy and tall. Let it grow."

It's a roundabout they could leave the tree in the middle and build it around the tree.

Everyone is happy.

As I recall, roundabouts tend to need good visibility to see where traffic is coming and going. Having a big tree block the view could cause accidents.

Helpful, but not necessary. The larger the roundabout, the less visibility you need across (since you will be paying attention to the rest of the traffic in front of you). An example is L'arc de Triomphe
Arc de Triomphe - view from the Eiffel tower - pictures, photos, facts and information on Arc de Triomphe - view from the Eiffel tower (Paris)

I've heard horror stories about getting stuck in the larger roundabouts.

Just cut the thing down and plant a new tree somewhere else in it's honor.

The town authorities are complete idiots. At the _very_ least you could sell that wood for a lot of money.

Should they fell this tree?

Hell, NO. Let them ride a bike like the rest of Europe. Get rid of those Beer Bellys.
