Govt. allows legal Mj.

Up til now marijuana has been illegal whether it was considered for medical use or not. Today the administration has told federal prosecuters to stop.

U.S. won't go after medical marijuana in states where legal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a policy shift, the Obama administration told federal prosecutors not to go after patients who use medical marijuana or dispensaries in states where it has been legalized, as long as they comply with state and federal laws.

From CNN
Quote:
"It will not be a priority to use federal resources to prosecute patients with serious illnesses or their caregivers who are complying with state laws on medical marijuana," said Attorney General Eric Holder. "But we will not tolerate drug traffickers who hide behind claims of compliance with state law to mask activities that are clearly illegal," Holder added.

The memo from Deputy Attorney General David Ogden was sent to U.S. attorneys in Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

Hm. It should be interesting. It's not overly difficult to acquire a medicinal marijuana license, so I'm curious to see if the federal government will eventually tell the state how to better mandate who (and why) someone gets a card.

Not exactly. There are concurrent State and federal laws governing drugs. Many states have sanctioned marijuana for medical use. However, it still violated federal laws and the Supreme Court issued a ruling several years ago stating they were within their rights to prosecute.

The President's executive order tells the Justice Dept not to make these cases a priority, since it is within the Executive Branch to determine what to prosecute. This ruling should please conservatives who believe in state rights.
