| Why a Silencer on an M4 in a Regular Combat Zone?
I was watching the news and I saw what I think was an M4 with a silencer. Maybe it was something else, but it looked to be about 6" long, and 2 1/2" around at the end of the barrel. It's not like he's in a situation where I would expect silenced fire is a benefit.
What's up with that?

A silencer aids in hiding your position. It makes it more difficult for the enemy to pinpoint where you're shooting from. It will also permit you to move and engage without the gunfire alerting other opposing forces that you're in the area. They serve many purposes . . . but are a bitch to clean and maintain.

Re-looked at your description . . . dimensions don't sound right to have been a silencer . . . |

Muzzel brakes/supressors are generally much shorter then six inches.
The link that tony provided -> m4 silencer - Google Images probably is what Chuck saw.

I think it was a silencer, but until the photo pops up again, we'll just have to guess.
It was not a muzzel brake. |
