What is the appropriate punishment for a teen?
Girl's parents force her to duel stepdad
I dont know about the Renaissance dueling, but spanking or beating the child is something that seems pretty typical(around these parts anyway).
I'm unsure if what they did IS appropriate punishment for the 16YO daughter who went to a party in direct disobedience of the parents orders. I would most likely be wanting to beat her myself. What do you think is an appropriate response?16-year-old girl was allegedly beaten by her parents and then forced to fight her stepfather in a medieval duel.
The girl's stepfather, Fremon Seay, and her mother, Julie Seay, who are both Renaissance enthusiasts in the State of Washington, were arrested over the weekend, msnbc reported.
Police say that Fremon Seay beat his stepdaughter with a tree branch before forcing her to dress in armour and fight him with a wooden sword for two hours while the girl's mother watched.
The teenager allegedly collapsed from exhaustion.
The Thurston County couple told police that they were disciplining the girl for attending a party without permission and that it was their right to decide how to discipline their child. They say technology slows down for no one. I know it outruns my wallet. I figure its because my wallet isn't light enough yet.

It's not typical in these parts and I'm against corporal punishment anyway.
Removing of privileges for undesirable behavior and rewards for appropriate behavior are what psychologists recommend. Whipping a 16 year old girl with a tree branch sounds more like living out one's fetish than it does child discipline.Conservatives: "If the facts disagree with our opinion, ignore the facts -- or at least misrepresent them."

16 is past the age for physical punishment. I'm OK with swatting younger children, but a teenager is too old for that. The parents were way over the line and it sounds like brutality to me.
Good job, friend-of-friends!

Depends on what kind of tree branch it was . . . when I was a kid, willow branches got my attention real quick! Especially when I had to go out and select the branch.
I tend to agree that 16 is to old for the tree branch though . . .

Agreed. Luckily I watched my older brother learn that lesson, and right on the spot, watching it happen to him alone taught it to me well without ever having the need to experience it myself
. I'd say my dad (may he rest in peace)
threw a good right hook though, not an uppercut

Fighting with armor wouldn't be punishment, that would be fun. I used to do it myself with the SCA when I was younger. A more appropriate punishment is to make her watch Barney and Teletubbies videos for hours.

Dumb parents. If they were real buffs they'd have married her off at 14 and not been dealing with it at all. And she'd be old enough to go to parties without asking.

No. The punishment did not fit the crime.
