A 23-year-old man, Jared Lee Loughner has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges in the shooting. He has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and is being forcibly medicated at a Missouri prison facility in an effort by authorities to make him mentally ready for trial.

    A waste of taxpayers money.

I can never understand why this "Mentally Competent" thing is so necessary. The competency will only be in the eyes of justice. This guy will never realize whats going on especially, with ALL the drugs they're pumping into him. Either keep him locked up or execute him NOW !!! One or the other.

I shed a tear when I watched it. Just want to give her a big hug.

So now what happens. Do they hold a special election now to fill her place?

    Yes:
According to state law, Gov. Jan Brewer (R-Ariz.) must set a date for a special election primary 80 to 90 days after Giffords formally steps down, and a general election will be set for 50 to 60 days after the primary. So the primary election for Giffords seat will likely be held in late April with the general election in June.

Uh, if he does suffer from BPD, then he certainly does have an argument that he is mentally unfit for trial. I won't even get into the topic of keeping him locked up or executing him ...

I did not shed a tear. Although I have to say I feel sorry for the trials she has and will have to go through.

I am surprised she stayed in office as long as she did.

As for BPD, I don't mind that as a defense but only for life in prison vs death penalty. If failing to take a pill makes this guy a killer then I think we can afford to give him 3 hots and a cot for the rest of his life.

Just think how you guys would feel if one of the six was your wife, child, Mother or Father???

I have NO empathy for a murderer. ( or rapist, for that matter )

I have empathy for anyone who was involved in this shooting. This man, Jared Lee Loughner has a mental problem and I feel bad that he made such a terrible mistake. If they only caught his illness before he went on a shooting rampage. Now his entire life is fucked because of what he did.
