Obama: Evolved
With his re-election bid looming, President Obama said in an interview Wednesday that he supported same-sex marriage.
“I’ve just concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.” President Obama said in the interview with ABC News.
The hastily arranged interview, with ABC’s Robin Roberts, gave Mr. Obama another opportunity to clarify what he has called his “evolving” position on a social issue that continues to sharply divide the American public.
In 2010, Mr. Obama said that his long-standing opposition to the idea of same-sex marriages has been changing. But he has refused to say since then whether he now supports extending the rights and privileges of marriage to same-sex couples.
“My feelings about this are constantly evolving,” he said two years ago. “I struggle with this. I have friends, I have people who work for me who are in powerful, strong, long-lasting gay or lesbian unions. And they are extraordinary people. And this is something that means a lot to them and they care deeply about.”
The effort by the White House to set up the interview comes after several days of intense pressure on Mr. Obama following comments in support of gay marriage by Vice President Joe Biden and Arne Duncan, the secretary of education.
ABC secured the interview with Mr. Obama on Tuesday afternoon, according to two people involved in the planning. It will take place at the White House. The interview was so hastily arranged, in fact, that Ms. Roberts was still in New York on Wednesday morning to co-host “Good Morning America”– and was planning on returning to New York right after the interview, because her mother is visiting and the two have dinner plans on Wednesday evening. In judging a two-person singing contest, never award the prize to the second soprano having heard only the first.

I can't fault him for the change.
I still would love to know what reason people give as to the need to stop gay marriage. How does this damage other people and infringe on other peoples rights.
If it does not damage or infringe on other people I don't know how you can justify banning it.
How is hurt by gay marriage and how?

This is a "Base" election. Obama is gambling that his base is stronger and more populated than Romney's base.
It has zero to do with "evolving". It's one more group he can "infer" a promise to.Obama: The rich have the Federal Reserve and the poor have Harry Reid... LOL. Life really is unfair!

Nice of him to come out and say it. But considering this is the guy who ended DADT, it's nothing new.
Good job, friend-of-friends!

Licking his finger and holding it up in the breeze, he's got enough Gay Marriage yes and undecided votes now to reveal his position. A sizeable % of pop vote is in the can. Still needs some work on union and migrant/illegals to bypass mainstream America. The sum of the fringe might just surpass the will of the heartland. A helluva gamble.

When people go to the polls, they're not thinking about gay marriage. Most people just don't give a crap either way. I guess that's what it means when more people are supporting it. The only people lobbying for it are gays and college kids who have gay friends. Everyone else has bigger issues to deal with. If Obama thinks he's going to get more votes with this move, he's barking up the wrong tree because those people were going to vote for him anyway. As a cynic, I have a hard time believing he "evolved" simply because he know supports gay marriage (especially considering the timing), but the votes just don't seem to add up in his favor. And the risk of alienating some voters is obviously a problem with such a decision.

So no one has the guts to defend gay marriage bans on a constitutional grounds.
Why does the government have the right to Ban gay marriage. If the preamble clearly places the pursuit of happiness as a prominent objective of government.
In my opinion this means that if "it neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg"--TJ it should pretty much be legal.
Who does gay marriage harm?
Who has to financially support gay marriage?
By what grounds do you feel it is consitutionally a requirement that gays not be married?
Why is it not ok for gays to marry?
Why is it ok for interracial opposite sex marriage? (when this happened we were afraid society would collapse as well)
Grow a pair and admitt that you purely believe that gays should not be married for religious reasons.
Should we ban alcohol, cigarettes, sex in any position other than missionary, masterbation, oral sex, music/dancing, gluttony/accumulation of wealth. Because all of those are kinda pushing the biblical envelope as well.
Should we ban condom use and sterilization proceedures they deviant in nature as they do "deviate from nature"?
Why is some dudes choice to look at a hairy butt and say oooooo I gotta have that not ok while the list above is ok.

Gay people have a right to be as miserable as the rest of us.

Do you have actual proof, or are you just beating your troll drum mad1? Or maybe you're talking about Romney?

I think we should ban TV.
TV depicts immoral things, it causes negative health effects, and it is un-natural.
People choose to watch it so it is just a choice. There is no Gene for TV watching and you do not find it in nature.
Therefore I propose NC prop 666 (NC mind and body act)
Mind and body being the two most important ingredients success of our state and country.
Entertainment found in the form of fiction TV and Books does not serve to improve the community in any meaningful way. In the interests of our state and national well being, now ban the watching of non educational television, reading of fiction books and playing of electronic devices for entertainment purposes. It is un-natural to sit and watch a screen filled with fantasy and fiction.
you know if TV was not so dang popular I think this bill would have legs.
Fiction TV and books are un-natural inactivities that people choose to enjoy. It is a self destructive choice. In the absence of TV people would interact more, sleep better, be more productive and probably eat better not having to squeeze several hours of TV in a night.

This election is about whether or not this current group of college grads, and the classes of 2013,14,15,16 on out to who knows how far are going to have jobs.
We won't even go into the permanent unemployed underclass who will never work because by the time we get our economy straight and productive again, they will be too old.
This is just a side bar for one issue people.Obama: The rich have the Federal Reserve and the poor have Harry Reid... LOL. Life really is unfair!

Considering that quite a few states have recently passed laws banning same-sex marriage, your statement is false. People go to the polls to specifically cast a vote on the issue.
False. See above. Most people just don't give a crap either way.
Link to poll where you discovered this demographic data? The only people lobbying for it are gays and college kids who have gay friends.
Actually, this could wind up costing him votes from the Latino and Black segments. If Obama thinks he's going to get more votes with this move, he's barking up the wrong tree because those people were going to vote for him anyway.
I agree. Reading between the lines, we already knew his position. This is the guy who ended DADT and instructed the Justice Department not to defend DOMA. He hasn't evolved. But he has come out of the closet. As a cynic, I have a hard time believing he "evolved"
Simply untrue. This is the guy who ended DADT and instructed the Justice Department not to defend DOMA. Show me where the flip-flop occurred.
It's a legitimate issue. As to the economy, unless you are willing to admit at least half the problem is due to a gridlocked Congress that refuses to raise taxes, I'd suggest you go troll elsewhere. This is a distraction from the real issue he has been unable to solve, the economy.Last edited by tony_j15; May 10th, 2012 at 03:51 PM.
