House votes to hold Attorney General Holder in contempt of Congress

The GOP-led House voted Thursday to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for failing to provide key information pertaining to Operation Fast and Furious, making Holder the first sitting Cabinet member to be held in contempt.

The vote was 255-67, with 17 Democrats breaking ranks to side with Republicans in favor of contempt.

The vote, which holds the attorney general in criminal contempt, was followed by a second vote that held Holder in civil contempt of Congress. The civil contempt vote allows Congress to go to court to seek additional documents.

The criminal-contempt vote is supposed to direct a U.S. attorney to convene a grand jury to review the case and decide whether to indict Holder.

However, considering Holder would be investigated by his own employees, some analysts have said it's unlikely that would happen. If the case proceeds, though, Holder could face a maximum one year in jail if convicted.

I hate the political stunt of the democrats walking out. Vote like men don't run away like children.

it is a great way to insure that you don't get a real tally of what people really thought. You hurumph and walk away with the crowd rather than actually putting forth a vote. It frees you of responsibility later on to say I did vote for or against that.

Last time I checked, voting "present" or not showing up at all was legal, and done frequently.

The whole thing is a circus show anyways.

Democrats have hammered GOP leaders for attacking Holder simply to embarrass President Obama amid his tough reelection fight – a charge Pelosi leveled again Thursday.

“What the Republicans are doing with this motion on the floor today is contemptible – even for them,” she said. “This is something that makes a witch hunt look like a day at the beach.”
Nancy, ...... how can you stand there and lie like that? Surely you know that if the Republicans were truly on a 'witch' hunt you would be surrounded by Republicans. You're not, and they're not as well.

So futile except as politics and NRA butt-kissing. It ain't going nowhere:
The Justice Department said it would not prosecute Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. for contempt of Congress, declaring that his decision to withhold information about a bungled gun-tracking operation did not constitute a crime. The department outlined its position in a letter, dated Thursday and released Friday, from Deputy Attorney General James Cole to Speaker John A. Boehner in the wake of the House vote on Thursday that found Mr. Holder in contempt. Mr. Cole said the decision was in line with long-standing Justice Department practice across administrations of both political parties. “We will not prosecute an executive branch official under the contempt of Congress statute for withholding subpoenaed documents pursuant to a presidential assertion of executive privilege,” Mr. Cole wrote.

I hope Holder will be held in a jail cell.
