15 dead, at least 50 injured in shooting at Colorado movie theater

At least 15 people have been killed and up to 50 injured after a mass shooting at a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" at a suburban Denver movie theater, police say.

The suspect, believed to be the lone gunman, is in police custody. KUSA reports that the suspect kicked down an emergency door at the theater, threw in some type of a smoke bomb and when moviegoers started to run, he began shooting.

Police, ambulances and emergency crews swarmed on the scene after frantic calls started flooding in to authorities, officials said.

He reportedly fired shots inside the theater and fled to the parking lot and was confronted by police already at the theater for crowd control.

The suspect’s identity was not released, but was wearing a bullet-proof vest and 24 years old, police said. The gunman was carrying a rifle, handgun and another unidentified gun, police said.

Too bad the police were not overzealous. It would be nice to hear how this guy died slowly from a shot to the throat multiple arm and leg wounds.

“The Dark Knight Rises,” killing 14 people and injuring at least 50 others, authorities said.

The police chief said 10 victims died at the theater and four at area hospitals.

Speaking at the scene where police were working to gain access to the apartment, Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates said: "His apartment is booby-trapped. We are trying to determine how to disarm the flammable or explosive material. We could be here for hours or days. The pictures are fairly disturbing. It looks very sophisticated, how it's booby-trapped. It could be a very long wait."
