    Amish Enjoy Unexpected Boom in Numbers

    Amish enjoy unexpected boom in numbers - Washington Times

    When it all ends, the Amish will be out there in their straw hats plowing and sitting down to a meal they grew, while the rest of us wonder why the grocery shelves are empty and Mc Donald's ran out of hamburgers.

    How many kids today have grown so much as a carrot, or rather had mom or dad show them how to grow a carrot.

    "Mary, there is an app for growing carrots. You make a little hole and put this little round thing in there and water it every day. In 12 weeks or so you will have carrots."

    "No way mom! They come in bags! Everyone knows that! You are embarrassing me!"

    Being familiar with farming, there is something really cool about growing your own food.

    Been growing as much as we can since I was born. Our garden isn't doing so hot this year unfortunately, but my dad's is ridiculous.

    Live long and prosper, Amish folks, you're doing it right.

    Our garden is about 40' by 80' and doing well. And yes, our kids work in it.

    And you've never mentioned this before in all the times I've talked about my garden? Crazy.

    I see the garden mainly on the weekends. My wife has the green thumb, not me. I'm the temporary labor when it's needed and I'm home. We did have purple cabbage, kohlrabi, broccoli, and peas from it last week. Fresh and tasty. So are the eggs that our hens lay so frequently that we can hardly eat them all.

    As great as fresh eggs from non-steroided chickens are, I don't have the patience to take care of the hens anymore.

    That's why I have kids. They're really my daughter's pets - with benefits.

    I don't think I could ever be Amish... I'm too much of a technophile*

    def technophile {

    ... tech·no·phi·le/tek no phile/
    ... Noun:
    ... One that does inappropriate things with computers, robots and other forms of electronics.'''

    }

    The Amish work extremely hard, but they reap great rewards from their hard efforts. In central PA, many of the Amish businesses are great tourist attractions that generate surprisingly good revenue.

    True and you'll find Mennonites mixed in there too.

    And their kids are less likely to get caught when selling drugs. That was a big deal when I was living there.

    Did you mistype? "... And their kids are less likely to get caught when selling drugs."

    I never realized how big the Amish population was in upstate NY. Lots of Mennonites.
