He's actually a very clever -- even brilliant -- writer, which is one of the reasons I generally find him so annoying.

He's perfected a trick of seeming like a perfectly reasonable person, and his columns almost always start that way before taking a nosedive into wild conjecture and self-contradiction; but by then his readers are already nodding in agreement and don't notice that he's changed directions completely.

Chuckiechan, your ability to fail to understand the obvious is charming in its way.

(Brooks, by the way, is doing his usual trick here. He's caricaturing Romney in so over-the-top fashion that he can have it both ways: Please the liberals, and have the conservatives claim he's actually satirizing them.)
