[FaD] USEFUL INFORMATION
Methinks it might be a good idea to have a thread in which we can post important "long-term" reference stuff (generally from the FaD boards) which would get lost, or missed by some people, if it was posted in the daily FaDChats threads. Might be nice if the thread could be kept reasonably clean i.e. limited only to short discussions/questions arising directly out of what is posted.
Here's an example of the sort of stuff I mean, posted by Keith this evening:
We have made some improvements. When you change your e-mail address in the Find-a-Drug client, the revised e-mail address is used for all clients with the same Nickname and old e-mail address. In practice, this means that members will no longer need to contact support if they change their e-mail address and have removed some installations.
Note:
1. You should still change the e-mail address in all accessible clients to avoid it reverting to the previous address.
2. You need to change the e-mail addres on the forum separately.
3. This improvement does not apply when the Nickname is changed.
We hope that this will significantly reduce the inconvenice to members and the delays waiting for a response from support. As consequence we should be able to give a faster response to other e-mails including those which prevent members crunching!

Keith posted this about half an hour ago:
I believe the DNS stuff has now been sorted but may take up to 48 hours to propogate. Any-one can set the IP address for www.find-a-drug.org.uk to 209.67.209.186 but please note that this is likely to change in a few months time.

A post by Keith a couple of weeks ago on changing Nicknames etc
Support are reluctant to change Nickname and/or e-mail addresses and only do so for installations which have been removed. We will also only do so when the old e-mail address and Nickname is provided as well as the new ones.
There is no way for members to change he registration details for installations which have been removed or other installations with the same Nickname and E-mail address.
Unlike some other distributing computing projects, the "master" copy of the registration information is stored on the member's PC. (This is necessary because multiple Internet servers are in use). Consequently, we can't change that information! All we can change is a copy which has been stored in our database. If a member then pushes Save, the copy in our database is overwritten...

October 19th, 2005, 08:58 AM #4Changing Nicknames
Posted by THINK aka Keith Davies on the FaD Boards on 18 October:
We are planning make a web interface available sometime next month to allow Nicknames and Email addresses to be changed for installations which have been deleted (ie inactive - having not returned any jobs for a period of time).
The way this will work is that members will use a web form to request the list of member numbers for a Nickname. Using this form a member can request an email to be sent to the registered email address for a member number. This email will include a link to another form which uses a password included in the email to change the Nickname, Email address and/or team identify.
We recognise that this will not help members who did not enter a valid email address or no longer have access to the registered email address!

Funny, but I want to be awake when I go, I don't want to miss one bit of it.
