DIMES is a distributed scientific research project, aimed to study the structure and topology of the Internet, with the help of a volunteer community (similar in spirit to projects such as SETI@Home).
Due to the way the Internet is engineered, distributing the Internet mapping effort is very important, and the only efficient way to measure the Internet structure is by asking you to participate. What we ask is not so much your CPU or bandwidth (which we hardly consume), but rather, your location. The more places we'll have presence in, the more accurate our maps will be. Understanding the structure and function of the Internet is an important research task, that will allow to make the Internet a better place for all of us.
The DIMES agent performs Internet measurements such as TRACEROUTE and PING at a low rate, consuming at peak 1KB/S. The agent DOES NOT send any information about its host's activity/personal data, and sends ONLY the results of its own measurements. Aside from giving a good feeling, running the DIMES agent will also provide you with maps of how the Internet looks from your home (currently) and will (in the future) provide you with a personalized 'Internet weather report' and other user-focused features.

Yeah, well I'd read that before I posted, but found it a little bit too vague for my liking. And that was why I asked more specific questions. "Similar in spirit to projects such as SETI@home" might be a good selling point to some, but it certainly isn't to me personally. Who is going to benefit from this project??? |

basically i think it is routing the internet's "highways". so it takes your machine, pings one of its servers somewhere, and tracest its route.... then it pings a machine somewhere else and traces that route... then after a while, they will be able to see where all the major lines run, and the small lines etc...
i dont think it has a noble cause such as FAD or any thing like that, but it is a neat idea |

I have it running on one machine, if it so much as drops Fad cpu rating by one point its dead meat. So far no problems. No explanation on how to install omn linux machines though. |

Yeah, I'm with the Cute Curmudgeon. It seems like a very vague project for some reason. FAD is quite explicit in its explination and cause and I don't see why this should be any different.

The DIMES project is designed to map the current internet. As it stands right now, it's been kind of thrown together, and although it works, it's not optimal. As this project works through, they will be able to see opportunities for improvement by merely routing the requests differently. In the mean time, there is a new internet backbone in developement, but that will not be for the normal persons use.
This is a way to improve on the current internet setup.
