| OK guys, get me going with Folding@home
Hi Guys,
I was recently contacted by a certain someone (yeah ......dude, you know who I mean) hahaha
I am still interested in joining the team, but if I'm going to, I wanna join at max power, or at least almost max.
The computers I have available for the project: An x2 @ 2.7Ghz and also an x1950xt
(dunno if those clients can run aside eachother) A dual P3 1.4Ghz A dual P3 1.25Ghz A dual P3 1.0Ghz
So you can see, that can crunch a bit away, but I want it running good, so I want the systems to run the client on both cores, not just one.
Please let me know where I can find a guide how to correctly install this stuff and I'll be joining you shortly.

I would install the smp beta client on all of those: http://www.stanford.edu/~kasson/fold...P%20Client.EXE
here's the smp faq: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-SMP Quote: Detailed Installation Instructions Windows Installation Instructions (Console)
Installation instructions are also included with the client download in a readme.rtf file. Note: The account under which the client runs MUST have a password. Blank passwords will cause the FAH cores to fail. - Required component for XP & 2000 (not Vista, it is built in): The Windows SMP client requires the Microsoft .NET framework v2.0; please install this prior to installing the client. The version 2.0 framework is required; it can co-exist with other versions, but this version must be installed. It can be obtained from Microsoft at the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en. Administrator privileges are required for installation.
- Unpack files. Run the self-extracting installer to unpack the SMP client files.
- Client installation. Run install.bat from within the SMP install directory to complete the installation. This will install MPI services that the client needs. If you have Windows Firewall enabled, you may get a pop-up window asking if you should give access to the smpd and mpiexec programs. Grant access. If you use an alternate firewall product, you will likely have to make a similar exception for smpd.
NOTE The username and password you provide for mpiexec should be your Windows login that you will run the client under. This is used for authentication on your local machine. It is cached in encrypted form in your Registry and is not transmitted to FAH servers. And if you change your password, you will need to run install.bat again.
At the end of the install process, you should see two lines of output:
If you see this twice, MPI is working If you see this twice, MPI is workingIf you do not see these lines, do not start the client. MPI is not successfully installed, and the client will not run successfully. - Run the client:
Run fah.exe to start the SMP client. You will get another pop-up firewall window. Note: We do not officially support running the SMP client as a service, although people have found the following to work - .NET 2.0 & Windows SMP Client must be installed from the same account with full administrator privileges.
- using the -configonly flag, say "yes" to services question & configure everything else as you normally would. Do not start the client yet.
- Open the services control pannel, go to the new FAH WinSMP service & open the properties and click the Log On tab. Select Log On As: This Account (instead of Local System Account), put the user name for the account under which .NET 2.0 and the SMP client were installed. Enter the password.
- Reboot. The SMP client will automatically start in service mode.
See the forum link for more details.

The above guide works for installing the smp client. Yes smp client does crunch real well with 4 cores, but works on 2 cores also. SMP client creates 4 threads per wu. So 4 cores get to crunch on all 4 cores, 2 cores split between the 2 cores to complete all 4 threads. Therefore takes a bit longer than 4 cores. Right now smp client gives 1760 points per wu. I think the q6600 crunch 2 smp wu per day, e6300 around 1 per day. Not 100% on the rate but just a wag. Not really tracking.
My current issue with the smp client which is beta is the error I get when I reboot the ws. I do not run it as a service yet and start it thru a shortcut on the startup folder. When I reboot the ws or does a weekly reboot, it get an error about mpiexec. The client starts before the mpiexec services starts. The client would not start but will normally if you start it manually after the mpiexec service starts. I think there is work around it but I am still looking.

If I can get my SMP client and my video card client to get along, I'll tell you the configuration. There is a way to do it, though. |

I run it on 2 e6600s and I get 30hrs on the one I don't play wow on and ~40 on the one I play on. I have no idea if that's good or bad. |

I'll have a look at it when I get home after work today. The rest of the systems I will have to do when I get back from Canada, going there for work for about a week.
What is the team number and all that info that I might need??
And would my output be good with these rigs in the farm?? I dunno how good the GPU client can crunch??
I have a total of 6.8Ghz of P3 power and 5.4Ghz of Athlon power, so that should do nicely, right?? And my 1950XT runs 675/2000, so....

I do know as you do that both cpu's crunch good on folding. Just how fast compare to others not really sure. |

If only my boss would let me run it on the servers of the company.
they have 8 servers that have dual dualcore opterons 2.8Ghz, 4 servers that have dual quadcore xeons 2.33Ghz and a few older ones, simple dual opterons.
would be a nice addition, I'd be on top in notime.
that will be strange, I am an Atheist as well. Glad to be onboard, hope I will crunch a lot for the team.
I don't switch to Intel, the duallies I have are servers, for that I will use them, just cause they are cheaper then AMD servers that I'd like and they have enough power.
For desktop I will always use AMD, as long as it's competitive, not when they start being a 2nd VIA or something, then I'd switch.
