The infamous TwinkleToes. I've heard a lot about you. Glad to see your still lurking around Timo.

Howdy crew.. Long day here.. And still no PC parts.

Operation GPU is going to commence by weeks end though!

Mr Scott is mumbling something about Alien dell Hardware, and getting the damn thing to talk to itself. (funny thing is as much as He talks to himself that should be easy.)

In My case that would no parts I don't feel like SMASHING!!!
Pulled the IDE H/D from GX270 put it and the power supply into the 280. It Boots up starts into windows and Blue screens. Tells me to run CHKDSK /F.
Kinda hard to do when you can't get to a prompt.
If I can get the damn thing to boot from the CD drive with the SATA drive hooked up it should work. If I could hook 2 drives to the IDE channel I could work with it. Using the proprietary Dell CD drive is a pain.
I wanted to just see if it will work, looks like it will be a case of more Beer, and a case swap.

it would be so much easier to just buy a real motherboard.

Harder YOU will be getting a few briuses from me, just ordered some extra parts for a dual cpu/gpu rig...

I guess I could break out all the skt A rigs... they are still around here all boxed up, I just think the electric bill won't stand it. I've gotten used to $80/month versus the $200/month before.

Leave the socket A boards packed, or sell them to buy something better. Go look at My production numbers, they just are not worth the time.

Old school AMD socket A running at 2.39GHZ is good for maybe a small WU a day. +/- a bit.
    A P4 2.8 socket 478 is just a tad better.
Can't really say what a P4 socket 775 with HT will do But I plan to find out, even if I have to buy a cheapo foxcon board.
Send Me all that Socket A junk and I'll save on Gas this winter. Probably burn the house down. Just had one of those flashbacks to the old DC days when I had 14 computers running, and still couldn't even get close to sharder Couldn't hear the TV either for that matter.

I wonder if they (SKT A) would push a decent AGP card though? like a Radeon 3650 or 3850.

Why not? Isn't it the GPU that matters?

So what do you think a Dual Socket 604 Xeon setup with 2 single core 2.4GHz Xeons would do? would they be about the same or better or worse than say a 2.2+ GHz Athlon X2 chip?

been thinking about using the Socket A's I have, but when I think about what it would cost for boards (PacificGeek.com has some decent ASRock KM266 boards for $19), SDRAM or DDR, HDD's, vid cards if needed, & PSU's... for $69 I could grab a single server board with the Xeons over at Geeks.com & some cheap ECC Registered DDR200/266 from over at PCSurplusOnline.com

    PCSurplusOnline.com - IB-09N4307 - 512MB IBM PC2100 ECC Registered DDR 266MHz DIMM 09N4307 - IB-09N4307

need cheap AGP vid cards for systems with no onboard video? PCSurplusOnline.com - Your One Stop Shop For Quality New & Used Computer Parts For Less

this is the site I bought the 2 new laptop CDRW drives from for dirt cheap last year, they were only 24x CD, but still not bad for the price, I think I paid like 12 bucks a piece or something, still sealed in antistatic bags... also grabbed a used Pentium M, I think it was 1.3GHz, but have never been able to find a board for that CPU, aside from one with a soldered on Celeron...

anyways, what I'm thinking I'm going to do in the coming months depending on when I get all my systems & parts stuff sorted out, is I'll be running the GPU clients for F@H on my systems & the CPU Clients of Rosetta@home on the CPU's for XPC, or possibly R@H & WCG...

mainly because as far as I know, R@H & WCG don't have GPU clients, unless others have heard otherwise?

just one more question for now, I know in this following link it says Core 2 Duo support, but can anyone think of any specific reasons why it wouldn't support a Core 2 Quad?

Intel BLKDG45FC Mini-ITX LGA775 Motherboard Intel Desktop Board Mainboard Intel G45 Express Chipset HDMI-Best Computer Online Store Houston Buy Discount Prices Texas-Directron.com

have been thinking & toying with the idea of grabbing a 2nd Q6600 chip & maybe this board & seeing if it would work, but would need to know for sure before wasting my money on it LOL...

it is a new chipset, of the P45/P43, G45/G43 Generation of chipsets which are some of the newest ones... but still, aside from maybe some aspect of the Bios, would there be anything else that would limit it to just Dual cores?

if so, I'd just grab a Wolfdale 2.5GHz Pentium Dual Core & throw that in for $90.

looking for something small to replace the 2nd system in the livingroom, still hesitant on the Socket 939 option... though its an SLI board so I could do a Dual GPU setup on that, & turn it into a dedicated Cruncher system only...

but for something else usuable & lower powered for general use & crunching while not being used, would like to do something like this. grab a small case & a single HDD & slim CDRW or DVDRW, & be good to go. the onboard video is actually pretty good for Intels graphics.

Dualy boards? H'mmm in a couple words. SMP CLIENT.

I have no experience with anything faster/newer than an Amd XP 2500 +, but anything Dual at that speed without a GPU client I would say SMP!

I'm the Slow Boat to China around here, Somebody else will clue you in as the best thing to do with those CPUs. I'm just guessing.

That's interesting. I've always read you can't fold on a AGP card. Something to do with it not supporting CUDA. Maybe it's just Nvidia AGP cards... IDK
    But thanks for the info.

    @Shy
You sir write the longest posts ever!

But on the chipset, I really don't see why it wouldn't support a quad. But in my experience, it's best not to risk it. You can get a cheap board that supports a Quad for cheap.
As far as the dual CPU thing. Mervteck has got that same setup you linked to with RAM for sale I believe. He's even got a cheap 8600 card, a FX-62 with a EVGA SLI board. All the stuff for cheap.
So if you got the doh, check into that.

This is the "build" I ordered. Don't know if it's the best choice, but it fit my budget. I have plenty of spare drives, bare cases etc available.

Maybe a 64-bit linux distro instead of M$ Windows.
