Is it worth it? Depends on what your do with your system dave. If your benching, playing games maxed out on a 30", or doing large video renders, then absolutely it's worth it. But if you just do light surfing, word, light gaming, it's not really worth the $ atm IMO.
And if you just got the upgrade fever, get yourself a nice new shiny Quad, like Time was talking about. Or get a new P45 board, and clock the hell out of your Quad.
Just my two pennies! |

don't get me wrong, the I7 is an upgrade. But it's pretty pricey atm, and really with your Quad OC'd, your not gonna really "notice" much of an upgrade. At least one that cost $500+ should bring you.
Again, that's just IMO.
The i7's are fast as hell, but so is a quad@ 3.6Ghz.
But dave, if you must splurg, then I would suggest the I7 920 (cheapest at microcenter in store) and either a EVGA X58 board, or the Gigabyte X58 UDP4.
Ram is kind of a toss up. I really like the Reapers. And I'd suggest you only get 3 gigs, as that stuff is only gonna be coming down in price, and you can pick up more later when needed.
And you don't even wanna look at HSF's for the I7. Man those things are crazy expensive. Newegg.com - i7, CPU Fans & Heatsinks
see..
I've gotten to play with one of these, and really it was an awesome cooler. It's just really really hard for me to pay that much for an air cooler though.

agreed on the CPU coolers, was looking at those a week ago, and turned off by the lack of Sub $30 coolers for i7... was hoping Arctic Cooling would have one out but apparently not yet.
Guess what happened today LOL...
I Finally got a response from MSI on the email I sent them in regards to replacement Push pins & Springs for the X58 mobo... Quote: |
Please contact our tech dept for parts and accessories @ 626-581-3001, then press option for tech dept. Thank you.
| LOL, no time for chatting I guess...
so I guess I'm supposed to press Option for Tech support, not Option 1 or 2 or 3, or A or B or C, but just Option...
oh well, will have to give it a try tomorrow, otherwise if doesn't work, I'll be looking one of you guys up on MSN or Pidgin tomorrow evening, ...Karma
for aftermarket Chipset heatsink replacements.
Dave, if you do get i7 & are strapped for cash due to price of the mobo's etc...
could do like what i did, jump on this deal for now till DDR3 prices come down on the better stuff... Newegg.com - Crucial 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory
ordered one of those for now to get by with, it has higher CAS latency, & all that, but not planning on doing any OCing until I can see how well the i7 platform does at stock speeds first.
once I get the chipset heatsink problem fixed and the i7 920 hopefully ordered this week I can get that set up... well, set up... (waiting on the RAM to be delivered this week sometime)
I might even buy a cheap Coolermaster Refurb case to stuff the Q6600 parts into, maybe see if I can't get both Quad rigs running side by side? maybe next paycheck pick up a cheap price 400W PSU to run the Q6600 & a low end 8600GT or something.
or even install the 9800GTX in the Q6600 with its 3GB DDR2-800 and the older 512MB 8800GTS in the i7 920 with its 3GB DDR3-1333 LOL, & run some comparison tests on Win7 Beta?
assuming I have the time to do something like that? chances are my co-worker will have his money by then & the 8800GTS will be bye bye

I got the vga box today, I can now play all my consoles on my monitor (not exactly best resolution). Now I have to wait for the 10 ft dvi and vga, and the hdmi to vga and av cables to come in.

WHOOOOA! The CS project from hell is finished!
Now I can look at the SMP on my Linux boxen . . . and see what I can't do about GPU crunching. How would you expect an overclocked 9600GT to perform? |

bit better than one thats not overclocked
seriously, depends on how OC'd it is... but should be able to net couple hundred extra PPD at least out of it with a decent OC.
if I remember right with others doing the same the key is the Shader clocks, and core clocks, not so much the memory. |
