Am planning on changing some of these things. I put together the kids rigs rather quickly, so they stopped trying to get on mine. I may or may not upgrade them. I just want to have the flexability with out having to deal with Microsoft on why I need the OEM reset ( I blew up the mobo, etc.. ) if that will even work. I just got off the phone with Microsoft and have found out about volume licensing, MSDN and TechNet. Exploring these possibilities now.

Last i had looked into it, they had a digital distro version at like 200 or 300 bucks a year all the software licenses but only downloads of software. |

Left hand side of the page. The first for $349 is download only. The second is for DVD+download. Both are for 1 year. After a year, you can renew cheaper than the initial, but the software is still good, just can't get new keys or downloads. Didn't really look too much more into MSDN, it just has the developer stuff I don't need anyway. When I called Microsoft today, I was told you can use it for 1 person on any number of computers. Just be sure to check it out yourself for your particular application, so you stay within the license guidelines. You can also go to one of the retailers on the right side, just be sure you are getting the FULL subscription, the person at M$ also said they are allowed to break it apart and sell it in pieces. I am just going to get it thru Microsoft, that way I know it is legit and complete.
Edit: Since I own/use ( for folding,etc...) the kids rigs and they are under 18, they are my computers too, so this should work and not violate the license. Let M$ complain about this and they will have a public relations nightmare on their hands. A very public trial, I may even get on Leno. Quote:

Well, time to get up and get ready for a bit of work again... Not sure if anyone has noticed that this is about two hours later than my recent first post time, but I've managed to wangle a bit of time as a techie...
It is only for a week or two, to cover for someone who is off sick, but tech work is tech work...! As an added bonus it is for a bank, so it should (hopefully) enable me to expand the areas I can apply for jobs in - as I hadn't got any banking/financial sector work on my CV...
Anyway, from what I already know, I will be building/imaging about 15 computers... Needless to say that I won't be installing F@H on any of them - even though it could've been a way of increasing PPD production........I've learnt that lesson..
Anyway, I need to start getting my stuff together ready to leave in about an hour..... SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM
Have fun, I'll see if I can get a chance to check in here (and TechIMO in general) while I'm out.... |

Unless the OEM license has changed in the last 2 years, I've been using XP Media Center OEM on 2 different PC's (not simultaneously), and have changed major parts more than once, and never had to buy a new version.
sure I had to reactivate/register, whatever it is, but as to buying a new copy, never.
maybe thats changed with Vista/Win7 though, I hope not, Otherwise there would be a lot of backlash against Microsoft for screwing over customers and milking them for their money, would be a pretty stupid move for M$, as it is, Apple is converting more people with the new release of Snow Leopard and its pricing scheme which is dirt cheap compared to Windows 7. |

well, turned 33 today, no vehicle, have to reapply for my health coverage, and have until Saturday to get that in, mailed it out today... not scheduled for work until Saturday, get paid on thursday but will be a small paycheck.
so with things kind of down in the dumps, and birthday just being another day in my life, I decided to buy myself something cheap...
saw this on sale at Tigerdirect this morning and ordered it a couple hours ago, so adds some more functionality to my Cell phone, since it has Stereo Bluetooth and Audio player functions... LG MSB-100 Bluetooth Stereo Speakers - Up To 20 Hours Usage Time, Echo Cancellation, Noise Suppression at TigerDirect.com
so for $20 its not a bad deal I guess.
should be here by the end of the week. |
