britches! Its been 11 days.
Ever since I changed my GPU client back to my original folding name, my computer has become unstable for some reason.
The power went out while I was away earlier this week and when I stopped by my house after realizing I could not connect remotely to my computer use any of my programs, my computer had frozen like as if it was out of memory. I could click on icons and the F@H clients were still running, but I could not open any documents or programs. I couldn't even restart the computer so I had to do a hard reset.
Well, when it came back up I forgot to do a verification on my RAID. Now that I came back again today my computer was locked up again. This time I am verifying and repairing my RAID to see if that had an errors causing the system freezes from when the power went out.
Soooo...how was everyone else's week?
PS. - First thread

well checked with a friend in Las Vegas, Fry's doesn't have that board, and checked on the fry's site, for the Texas stores, seems like none of them have it in stock (found out by adding to cart, the store pick up for shipping, then check out, you enter the city and state for nearest store, then it shows a list and item availability), so thats 2 sources down... know someone from another forum from Texas, and was going to ask them, but as I found out, its not available there either...
so unless I get some other source for a cheap AM2/AM2+/AM3 socket board, might have to go with that $70 combo.

Hmmm, looking around, I found this: Newegg.com - JetWay JATOM-GM1-230-LF Intel Atom 230 Intel 945GC Flex ATX Motherboard/CPU Combo - Motherboard / CPU / VGA Combo
granted its probably less power than that other combo I found, but for the price its not bad, would fit in the Qpack case easily, has more expansion slot options, plus down the road I could look into getting a low powered low profile GT220 (48 SP's and near 4670 performance at 40nm, and according to a review on Toms Hardware, pulling only around 60W of power at load, 20W at idle) and one of those PCIE x16 to x1 adapters (want to avoid dremeling things), and install that in there. but for my needs, its all I really need for Skype, backing up files, and using for other low priority needs like that right now.
between that GT220 and if I should happen to find a couple of 9500GT's in PCI flavor for cheap somewhere, I can add 2 of those in as well, and still not worry much for power LOL...
but thats wishful thinking for now.
decisions though, AM2/AM2+ mobo with Sempron and a PCIE x16 slot for a bit more, or go with single core Atom, with this other combo...
either one will be running XP that much is for sure.
the thought of a near MiniITX system, but with more expansion options and a reduced Power/heat footprint is appealing, granted they'd still be mounted in the same case no matter what, and I would be looking into Overclocking an Atom anyways (bump the FSB to 667 to get 2GHz)
won't know for sure for another week though.
plus add in the quiet factor and low heat output, only thing in the case that'd be loud is the 420W PSU. |

Well, it's pretty hard to get the Sky King "Gold Star of Endorsement"... I have mentioned a couple of products that have just completely impressed the livin' crap outta me, such as...
-VMware in general
-The Intel i7
-WD Velociraptor Drive
-Run Core high performance SSDs
Well, here's a new one:
Windows 7. I have never been impressed by a new Microsoft OS before. Ever. And in the past I always waited at least 6 months, 'til SP1 came out, for 2000, XP, and Vista. But I made the switch to W7 early, ran the RCs for a while, and have switched my laptop, netbook, and folding rig over just days after public release and am flipping the kid's computer this weekend. Plain and simply, I am impressed. Office 2007 and W7 seem like a new era for microsoft, of being much more responsive to the market.
Oh and don't forget, if you're a student or have a registered student in your family/inner circle, keep an eye on Microsoft's "ultimate steal" educational discounts... the prices are absurdly low: Microsoft Office Discount for US Students -The Ultimate Steal- Office 2007 Software for $59.95 |
