Got the FX-8120 somewhat stable @ 4.2ghz.... going to need more work.
Got the gtx480 from 700mhz core to 800mhz core w/ ease on stock air. Not pushing it further though.
However, i've noticed my volts are becoming less stable overall.
My psu is that ocz 700w gamexstream, but it was a refurb..
But not taking the refurb fact into it, I'm thinking my system is just a power hog at this point and is causing instability.
I mean, a stock volted 8120 uses 125w.... mine at 1.3875v and 4.2ghz uses like 165w alone...
A stock gtx480 uses 250w alone... mine at 800core probably uses are 265 or so I'd imagine, add. I mean those two items alone are over 440w.
Add in the rest of the rig and the fact that the psu is refurb is making me wonder if this old trusty OCZ is simply under powered?Main PC: AMD FX-8350 / 16gb DDR3 1600 / AMD 7970GE 1200mhz Core & 1600mhz Mem / Win7 Pro 64bit

freaking insane and STUPID, Nvidia just announced the GTX 690... it is dual 680's on a single card, and someone finally took their head out of their ass and put a "vapor pot chamber" type cooler on the things, instead of the older Heatpipe based coolers, much like Sapphire Has been doing for 2 or so years now with AMD/ATI cards and their Vapor-X series coolers.
3000+ CUDA cores on the thing... and here's the best part.... MSRP is $999.
Yep, if you have an easy grand to burn, go ahead and pick one of those up.
Apparently the marketing geniuses and who ever else responsible, decided, hey we released the 680 last month, lets release a Dual GPU version this month.... Oh and we'll forget all about where our REAL sales and income comes in from... the mainstream and mid range cards/sales.
STILL no word on those target markets and releases.
It should Fold pretty damn good.... but seriously, the 680 costs half a grand as it is, lets forget about the Dual GPU version and BRING OUT THE LOWER MODELS.... unless you really want to lose that much in sales to AMD, then continue making these stupid releases and decisions.
Already the Radeon 7870 competes with the GTX 570 (no 600 series replacement yet), the 7850 beats & competes with the GTX 560 Ti/Ti 448 cores, of course no 600 series replacements.
the 7770 comes close to the GTX 560's range. probably a little below that, but I'm sure AMD will probably have a "7790" model thats a gimped 7850 for closer to the 7700's price that will surely best the 560.
the 7750 already beats EVERYTHING from Nvidia below the GTX 550 Ti, and runs a mere 55W of power, single slot and a 6 to 7 inch long card.
Nvidia is losing too much ground and focusing too damn much on their low sales, over priced high end cards.
If it weren't for the Folding on the 500 series, and some of the CUDA apps I have, I would feel like a real ass right now, for going for an Nvidia GTX 560 Ti setup, but thankful I have yet to buy a 2nd one for SLI.
at this point its looking more and more better to go with AMD and some 7800's in Crossfire than Nvidia & SLI, at least if Nvidia doesn't get off its butt and start releasing the mid range and mainstream products.
if anything this 690 should of been held off until those other ranges were released, they can't even keep stock in hand for the current 680 cards, as their mainly sold out on a lot of sites.
and then there is the whole GK104 chips (GTX 680/690) vs the GK110's (as some have mentioned the the "Real" Kepler's)... I'm starting to wonder if Nvidia even knows what its doing anymore, or what it really wants?
On the plus side, should be Thankful their not making CPU's, otherwise we could see a new $1000 Quad core, and then a month later see a new $2000 8 Core, with nothing lower than that for months, leaving Intel to mop up all the REAL sales.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

I just saw it on lamebook.
I don't get why they came out with the GTX 690 either. I was more hoping for a Gt 640/630 or GTX 650/660 so the prices come down on the 500s and 400s.
BTW the 680s are still "backorder" too, so that's great 690s will likely be in stock first.

I agree 100% Shy. In fact, I'm thankful I jumped on the gtx480 wagon, as it seems like we will be waiting forever for anything in the $200 range that can beat it.
I was really hoping they brought out the 660/660ti/670Main PC: AMD FX-8350 / 16gb DDR3 1600 / AMD 7970GE 1200mhz Core & 1600mhz Mem / Win7 Pro 64bit

So uhhh..... how crazy do you think I'd be considered if I gave away my FX to my bro (who is in desperate need of a more powerful pc for any sort of gaming) and picked up an i7 2600k or 2700k alongside a decent mobo?
Ths is probably shocking considering I just built this rig all of 2 monthes ago...
And the reason? After doing extensive testing and benchmarking, this thing just runs too damn hot. I mean, I'm no great overclocking expert (though I would hardly call myself new to it) and I can't get this thing to run cool enough under 100% load.
Sure I've gotten it to 4ghz and even 4.2ghz stable for GAMES. Put any sort of load on it near 100% and it creeps up past 60*c which is a big no no on these chips then throttles down to 1.3ghz..
Now I'm thinking, maybe I got a bad batched cpu? I've reseated the CM Hyper 212+ evo multiple times and used As5, as well as others to ensure I'm not crazy. I've even added a second fan to the HS and still, it runs too hot and gets unstable.
Hell, even if I put it at 1.3v and 3.6ghz (stock speed of 8150) it will overheat on 100% load...
Perhaps someone can shed some light? If not, I'm about to just do what I should have done and gone Intel this round.
For example, though BF3 is gpu intensive, going from 4ghz to 3.1ghz dropped me easily 10-12fps online in 64player battles.
This to me is unacceptable considering I can't get a truly stable 4ghz.Main PC: AMD FX-8350 / 16gb DDR3 1600 / AMD 7970GE 1200mhz Core & 1600mhz Mem / Win7 Pro 64bit

Ivy Bridge is out now...
Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, CPUs / Processors, Processors - Desktops, LGA 1155, Ivy Bridge
So if your thinking of moving up to it... I'd go for it, if you can afford the upgrade LOL.
Grab a Z77 Mobo, and Ivy Bridge and you'd be good to go.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

Hello all. Have some questions for you guys. Old system is in need of an upgrade.
Whats the diffrence between xeon and i7? both 1366. As you all know I have a bunch of i7 cores sitting around and was wondering if they can be used in this board? EVGA | Products
If not any suggestions on an EVGA ( preferred ) or ASUS board.
Just ordered some Corsair Dominator memory ( 3x4 Gb ) so want to use that also.
EDIT:

the i7's are only Single Socket capable, for that board you would need to run Xeon's for Dual CPU use. though from what I remember I think if you used a single i7 you could use it in it. (meh, I looked up the manual and it says that due to the chipset used it will only recognize Xeon's, but you can use a single Xeon if you want, or run dual)
JJ, check EVGA's B-Stock Items, they have some decent boards that are Recertified, not sure how much in stock, but for $80 you can get a nice Quad SLI capable X58 board to use the i7's in.
EVGA | Products | Product List
They even currently have that SR2 board for $400 instead of $500-550
Meh, looks like the $80 one is out of stock, but they have 3 others ranging from $130-190 in price to stuff the i7's in.
KK pointed me towards EVGA's B Stock last year, and I picked up my EVGA X58 SLI LE board from them for around $130, its in perfect working order (the only gripe I have is the Chipset cooler, though "Stylized" its not all that effective for cooling and gets quite warm, its not the heatpipe ones you see on the ones in the link above, and the heatsink is adhered with epoxy, so no mounting hardware for easy removal and replacement.)
But overall its not a bad board, only 6 SATA ports, but with my new upgrades I've reduced the number of drives I run, so not a big issue.
has SLI support rather than Crossfire only like my prior one, and PLENTY of OCing options in the bios. Also has Four PCIe x16 slots, 3 of them can be use with double wide cards, one is close to the 3rd so for those two I'd need to use a single and double or two singles.
I think one is x4 bandwidth (2.0 Spec), and the other 3 are x8 when used in SLI, or maybe it was x16 for primary and x8 x8 for the other two, I'd have to look up the manual again to know for sure.
Anyways, they're good products, for reduced price.
Neweggs selection of boards is dwindling as well for Socket 1366, so choices are less and less.
I just saw the other day, an Asus Saber something or other X58 board open box on there for $130.
My board is similar to this one, but has a 4th PCIe x16 slot where that last x1 slot is:
Newegg.com - EVGA 131-GT-E767-TR LGA 1366 Intel X58 SLI 3 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
But you can see the cooler it uses on the chipset, looks neat, but not as effective as it should be, needs some sort of active air flow over it for good cooling unfortunately.
here's some good deals:

Thanks Shy, I like the 2 Classsified boards on EVGA B-stock.
Was also thinking of going to the newest generation of chip set, but Aaron is not over here to advise me on what to actually get. <---- hint . I have 2-3 i7-920-DO's still in the box, so it is either use or get rid of them.
My Classified LE board has a bad memory slot, so need to RMA that and wanted to get something else built while waiting for it to come back. I have 2 P6T boards here I can use also, but was wondering if there was something I could use 2 of the i7 chips on. Damm, there is not.
Sounds like gibberish, but I really like the Classified board I have now. The P6T's are nice, can probably do more but with my limited tinkering skills, I am used to the EVGA setup.
