F@H **Official** SPAM Thread Episode II (5-22-2012)

"The Return Of The PC Upgrade Procrastinator"

    LMAO!!!

Figured we needed a new FAH Spam Thread, the last one was on 25 pages on my end, its been well over 3 months now.

    Old Thread is here: http://www.techimo.com/forum/distrib...2-02-09-a.html

I'll let NLM or someone else post the stats, Don't have the link to the copy of the stats to post here, so....

Figured I'd also share a couple pics of how the new rig is coming along as well.

Sorry about the pic sizes, I'm on my moms netbook and posting these and didn't get around to resizing them like I would on my main rig (its been powered off all weekend while I worked, and due to weather this past weekend)

its about 90-95% complete in the hardware aspect (just the SATA Data cables and power cables, and side case fan cable needs to be done.)

the back side of the case can be done a bit neater, but its hid out of site so not a big deal.

Its not like this is entering a competition, but considering every other PC I've ever owned or built this is the NEATEST cable job I have ever had.

air flow should be excellent in this as well.

140mm flow from bottom to top as the main flow through the case, to evacuate rear heat from video card/s out top, CPU Rad heat from back through top (with some escaping from side panel and front drive bays), and HDD heat from front intake towards middle and up top.

PSU fan is in its own little world, takes air in from bottom and out back like most cases like this.

the 2nd pic you can see the Power distribution block I installed (in the bottom 5.25" drive bay) for the Case fans, 5x 3 pin block powered by a single 4 Pin Molex.

Front fan is the stock Coolermaster Blue LED 140mm. LED can be turned on and off from cases button on top. Top fan is a 140mm Xigmatek Blue LED, its not very bright thankfully, but just enough for a nice glow. Bottom fan is a Green LED Xiggy 140mm, same story, not too bright, and with bottom fan filter, and GPU blocking most of the light, very little green light should be coming out of case, just enough for a subtle green glow. Side fan is 140mm stock CM fan, but not lit. And of course the Dual Noctua NF-P12's on the Corsair H60.

Using an HD Audio Extension cable, USB 2.0 Extension cable, and front Panel Header Extensions (notice the colors, they all match the color for the headers and the actual case wires, so I know which ones go where and connect to what LOL).

all of these cables, along with the 2x 4 pin Molex extensions I have are Bit Fenix Alchemy series cables, and the Power Distro Block is a Modright part, all ordered from FrozenCPU.com.

have my Akasa ProSlim SATA 6Gbps cables on the way as well.

Biggest nightmare with me will be if and when I Upgrade the top case panel to the USB 3.0 capable part down the road, once I get a decent USB 3.0 expansion card in it.

which means disconnecting the front panel wire bundle, SATA HDD Dock, and USB cables, and reconnecting them after installing everything, including the on/off switch for the front case fan LED.

I've messed around with the new version 7 client.. seems to work fine on XP. It looks like a normal work unit for a phenom 2 x4 920 is around 900 points a WU, but it takes a good 6 hours. The i7 3930K gets about 1600 points a WU and takes just 1 hour.

The one thing I dont like, ok, two things I don't like:

both the gpu and cpu clients are linked and both will pause or pause when done if set to to finish. In a way it would be great if they can both run on there own .. and I dont know. When it was a cpu v6 client all the cores were independent, and could be stopped while others can still run. That's what is missing.

The other thing is in Windows 7 I seem to have to always use "run as administrator" to get it to work.

I took the GTX 580 out to get it ready to ship. I'm still waiting on the queue though. I'm sure the new FaH core still won't be ready if or when I get the GTX 680.

Thought I sent a response in the other thread but guess it never went out.

Anyways, got the 850w setup and it has worked beatifully. Cable management is much easier with this setup, as the only two additional cables I needed were the molex and sata, in which one strand of each did just fine.

Seems to be more stable too (or perhaps in my head) but got the GTX480 to 800mhz core vs 700mhz, and bumped the mem up about 100mhz too (though it's not needed, has plenty of bandwidth as it is for my 1920x1080 res)

I will try to OC the bulldozer again over the next few day, perhaps this will help with my vdroop issue I was experiencing and can get me more stable volts.

Foolishly, I also threw the 6670 in my bro's pc with the 220w unit (against both of our own advice ) and knock on wood it's been running good so far. Played a few hours of crysis 2 on it w/o issue and temps are good, psu also seems to run cool even under load.

It's a liteon 220w (80+ bronze) cert, but no idea if it's a rebadge of a good unit. Either way, it's temporary and I advised him to use it mostly for media / browsing for now as to not stress the psu underload.

I will tell you what though, it just makes me appreciate my setup so much, trying to play Crysis 2 on a x4 645, 4gb ddr3 and 6670 was a nightmare for framerates, even on the lowest settings. (albeit we were playing at the native 1920x1080 on my montor)

It really makes me wonder what most people consider "playable"

If you look on youtube, these people always claim such high settings for crap hardware and say it's smooth, yet there is just no way the hardware can do it.

Plus, then you've got all the idiots asking questions on the videos... the whole "will my system run it?" and the plethora of wrong information or just bad advice.

I've even seen someone recommend a 6450 for battlefield 3 and I can't help but ALMOST feel bad for the guy wasting money and not doing his own research.

This site and a very few others are the only things I base my opinion on. Plus hours and hours of research.

My GF calls me crazy, but I'd much rather spend a few days researching the best product than just going out and buying one that may be good, but could be a complete flop.

LMAO, on your 2nd half of your post, I know exactly what your saying. I have read too many of those postings and comments and claims on YT and even newegg reviews to know better.

Hell I've gotten into arguments on here with Noob posters who claim they were able to do such & such games on high settings with a low end crap card, and get smooth frame rates, meanwhile I can barely maintain a good framerate on my setup and card, thats 2 or 3 or 4 times more powerful at same res and settings.

I think once it even got down right hostile in commentary, mainly due to some @ss butting in and spouting off BS while I was trying to help someone else.

yeah from what I read on the NZXT PSU, it did have much more stable power and the whole Ripple/Noise issue was pretty good as well, so should be more stable for OCing as well.

using the Modular cables, I thought the Ribbon like cables would be a pain to use, less flexible, but they are actually pretty decent, at least when I had to mount the bottom fan and bend/pin them between the fan and connectors, if this had been my 500W OCZ ModXStream it would of never fit in that small slot of space routing the cables, using the more traditional rounded bundle of sleeved cables.

I also have to wonder why the Newegg reviews some claimed the cables were very stiff... obviously they don't know what stiff is... apparently a limp dick is stiff in their mind LMAO!!!

the cables are a bit stiff for the ribbon modular cables, but once you start working with them, they become a bit more flexible, not by much, but the do loosen up a bit, but do to the ribbon like form, the type of plastic coating they have on them, its expected to be a bit stiff. The cables that are already connected to the box, the 24 pin, 8 pin and 2 PCIe bundles with regular sleeving on them, were actually quite Pliable, far more than my Corsair 750TX was when I first got that years ago.

the only con I have is the PCIe connectors at the end of the 2 main bundles, are a bit stiff and hard to bend into place, especially the placement of the extra 2 pins for 8 pin connection.

    ah, I see.

Nice deal then. I think the 680 uses the GK 104 cores, right?

Nvidia just announced at their conference in San Francisco ( or may be it was San Diego, I forget off hand, Sharder got an invite to it in his Email, is all I can remember LOL), anyways, they just announced the Tesla Series cards using the GK 114 cores.

Which I hope means the 650 and 660's are on their way soon.

The upgrade to the 680 is the plan I'm staying with. I did think about the 670 instead. or even 2 670's... something..

I'm pretty certain I was fine with what I had, but better to have the most for the next 3 years.

The one thing I think I'll change is the CPU cooler to something easier to manage. Taking the whole thing apart to clean is kind of a project. It seems to cool ok even dusty. the "water" temp seems to be 42c under load and the cpu is 50c under load (internally it shows 60c to 65c depending on the core).

not a bad deal for a little low powered rig: Biostar A780L3B AMD 760G Socket AM3 mATX Motherboard Kit Biostar COMBOA7L3B

the CPU is a Single core, but some of these are unlockable to a Dual core, and show as Athlon II X2 4400+ or something like that.

The Mobo has the SB710 Chipset that you need to do the unlocking as well (SB710, 750, 850, etc)

so for $69, its not a bad deal really, with the chance of unlocking to a Dual core.

though would suck to get stuck with the single core if it didn't LOL.

Anyone looking for a decent new in box 500W Quality brand PSU? for cheap?

    OCZ StealthXStream 500W 20+4-pin ATX Power Supply w/SATA & OCZ OCZ500SXS StealthXStream

stock is almost gone, but for the price its not a bad deal either.

Exactly. After reading some reviews I was like crap, that sounds like a PITA, but I've got to say the ribbon cables worked well in my V3 case, as they seemed to tuck in much better and route easier to hide as well. Airflow has definitely since improved no doubt about it.

Guess i'm getting older too, but I like the fact that it doesn't have an LED fan in it. My OCZ had a blue led and it was cool at first, but got old. Though to be honest this may be due to the fact that I've got an "ambient" green led 120mm fan for the front intake that compliments the case without being too bright. I admit it, red's my favorite color but I went green to signify my change back to team green.

yeah, I haven't had any LED fan PSU's in years, I think my OCZ 700W GameXStream was the last, and that was 3 or so years ago at least. Every PSU I've had since doesn't have them in it, the OCZ 500W ModXStream, PC Power & Cooling 750W, Corsair TX750, OCZ StealthXStream 500W, Antec Neo Eco 400W, Antec Neo Eco 520W, and the NZXT.

I was just never a fan of the LED light in the PSU for some reason, if it was there, fine, if not, no big loss.

But like you I have the LED front fans and other case fans with LEDs on it, so no need for one really.

I don't mind have a couple of lights on in the case, as long as they aren't too bright, Blue and Green are my favorite Colors with Red 2nd after them, but I actually prefer Red LED's in cases, as they're more of a Warm color, and not the cool, cold or sick to my stomach green LOL.

as I use my case as sort of a night light in my room, rather than the LCD Display being on all the time which can be over powering with the whites lighting up the room.

actually the red glow from my keyboard and mouse are enough for me usually.

but yeah, the only reason I have Green LED in my case, is because of Team Green still in the system, but its just a hint of Green LED, since its the bottom case fan. The front fans LED can be turned off, but the top mount fan is inside the case, and its a smoke tint plastic, so the blue isn't over powering.

But, Green for Nvidia and Blue for Intel. Was mainly the reason why. Otherwise I could of just went with 2 non LED 140mm fans instead. oddly, that would of cost me more than what I paid for the LED Xigmateks though LOL.

Meh, though it won't be on the system for long, downloading and installing Skyrim from Steam at the moment, found out it supposedly only needs about 4-5GB of Drive space to install, according to Steam anyways.

Meanwhile, Portal 2 needs nearly 12GB.

figured to see how Skyrim runs, take some screen shots or see what the frame rates are, and this way I know how much better it runs on the newer system once I reinstall it on there.
