UD, It's not what it used to be..

OK UD members let's talk about UD and the changes they have made. A lot of our team mates are dissatisfied with all the gloss and corporate things going on over there.
We should talk about it and decide what we want to do about it and where we are going for the future.

    Lets voice our opinions.

What should we do? Continue UD? Moove over to FAD?
Vote and give your comments please.

(btw this is not a FAD recruitment thread please do not go that direction)

I've no interest in reading the news at ud, so I might as well ask here what is this grid-thing I seem to logon nowadays instead of ud?

There seems to be a load of unhappy crackers here...

My dislike for the ud thingie is that the agent is huge, it still takes ~25mb of system resources to run.

Hey, I got the first vote. Probably the only time in my life when my vote will be noticed.

I don't mind UD. It stays out of my way and it's for a good cause.

Besides, I'm just about to jump from page 3 to page 2.

    Look out, daveleau.

I'm sticking it out with UD... there are always some unhappy customers when things change. I'm going to stay right where I am for now... change isn't always bad.

Besides... I can't quit now... I'm gonna hit one million in a few more weeks!

    Voted: Go with Fad.

Put a lot of time, effort, and expense into UD.
    Enjoyed it.
    Afterall. What are hobbies for?

FaD is my DC of flavour Atm.

Sure I'm tired of dying drives, 98/XP networking issues, Ati vid card drivers,
3com nic drivers, lowsy local mains supplys.

But I keep my 333 celery [runt of the herd] going, because it's handy to put,
either a beer, or my foot on, or both.

Occasionally it turns out a result.

DC? Cant help myself atm. Just got a Gigabyte 7ZX in the post today.
Going to stoke it with an old Duron, except i'm running out of ram sticks!

Surreal, I am dissapointed at the attitude UD has taken to it's adherents.
Perhaps you are too. Such a shame.

I worked hard. We all did. Had Fun!

IMO. FaD is, really not very exciting!

    However.

    There is here still.
    The community need.
    For team spirit.
It is alive and well at FaD.

    Divided loyalties Atm.

I am also staying with UD, bin doing it for ages now and I like the client as it is hassle free really. Also I was one of the lucky ones to win a 3 grand PC in the early days when there were prizes so I feel I kinda owe them something

edit: Just found out that FAD will run alongside UD and AIDS no problems so I am gonna load it up as well.

OK, I'm the guy who voted "option 3" above.

Having said that, I've had my ups and downs with UD, but I'll probably stick with it a while yet. There's stuff I don't like about the thing (the politics, condescending nature, and the blatantly commercial track it has taken lately).

But the herd knows what to do, and, for the moment, is fairly low-maintenance, even for a dial-upper like me.

The herd has been the subject of some heavy recruiting efforts on the part of TIMO FaD folks, and that's fine, I'm looking into it. But what was touted as an easy, no muss-no fuss way to run it on multiple machines off of one server looks more like a royal pain to a non-programming guitar picker like me.

Eventually, I'll get a machine or two on it, but only after I find a "front-to-back everything you need to know FaD For Dummies" tutorial.

Why, you might ask (but probably won't ) ?? Just because I'm tired of it all and not really up for a learning curve right now. I've got too much stuff and not enough time, so a lotta this stuff is gonna go, along with 35 years of accumulated rock and roll.

Just my 2 cents worth, I'm sticking around UD for now and sniffing out FaD, but in the foreseeable future, neither is gonna be as over-the-top as I've been in the past.

Well, I've stuck it out with UD on the cows that won't timeout, but I think it's time for me to make the break and go completely to FaD.

Even though UD has much more crunching power and probably will get some real cool projects to run, the way the UD management treat volunteer crunchers is a joke.

Whereas FaD is very refreshing in wanting to listen to and take care of crunchers. And the client is so lean and mean it's amazing!

There will always be those who will want to crunch UD. I think TechIMO needs to continue the UD Team for those who want to go with it.

But I'm jumping ship completely now. I've had enough corporate greed for a bit.

    Cheers
    Mick

I'm in the UD team, and I really don't care. I haven't kept up with the UD news or anything, but I did notice an extra wierd login that I had to go through.

Is there some story i didn't read or news i never heard. Corperate greed? UD's politics? I'm really lost.

Sorry I'm so unopinioned in this subject. I'll follow you guys.

while i am part of the techimo fad team (just 1 cow) ud continues to be my primary dc.

yeah, the folks at UD are far from perfect, but neither are they the complete badguys which some people here are trying to paint them as.

having corporate sponsors sometimes means that, at times, 'politics' might get in the way. do you think the red cross or other organizations don't have to do the same. and sometines, you need PR to get attention for the cause.

the nice thing about UD which i like, compared to FAD, is that WU's that have longer completion times, will reward you w/greater pts. not so, w/fad!

muno, what is the 25mb that you're taking about? my ud folder is 3megs and the ud ram usage is 19.5mb. now granted it's about twice as much as FAD's 9.2mb, but it's not that big a deal in this day & age where most machines are >=256mb.

the UD client is imo easier for the newbie to set up. no queues, etc to fuss with.

well, enough talk...i gotta get back to crunching UD! 1 Mill, here i come

I'll be staying with UD! I started when the team was 400+ in the standings, and have watched us rise to the high 20's in the standings!
I will finish what I began 16 months ago! I have almost 19 years of CPU time into this project, all out of my home!
I am running the smallpox project on a few machines also.

I'm sure Genome would run fine with FAD, but it also runs fine with UD.

I have no plans to switch at this time.

I'm gonna keep the UD brand on my herd for now. No plans to rebrand em. But don't think I won't be thinking about FaD

    Rovastar,

I know what FaD is. As a matter of fact, as soon as I rearrange the OSs on a few boxes, I'm going to install the FaD Linux client. I wasn't disparaging FaD, I was just pointing what I like about UD.

    Awww, Cripes

I should never post stuff like that at the office when I'm tired. I think I've had about enough, then I come home, milk the cows (which is pretty painless these days) and have myself a 6,000 point day.

    w00t!
