*$4.8 trillion - Interest on U.S. debt* (http://money.cnn.com/2009/11/19/news/economy/debt_interest/index.htm)
Unless lawmakers make big changes, the interest Americans will have to pay to keep the country running over the next decade will reach unheard of levels.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Here's a new way to think about the U.S. government's epic borrowing: More than half of the $9 trillion in debt that Uncle Sam is expected to build up over the next decade will be interest.

More than half. In fact, $4.8 trillion.

If that's hard to grasp, here's another way to look at why that's a problem.

In 2015 alone, the estimated interest due - $533 billion - is equal to a third of the federal income taxes expected to be paid that year, said Charles Konigsberg, chief budget counsel of the Concord Coalition, a deficit watchdog group.

Bailing out crappy auto makers?? get your paws off my wallet!

My 45 yr old sister in law has top notch coverage in California. She is battling Crohns disease and it currently threatens her life. She is actually having to trick and massage her coverage providers to get the MRI's she needs. Twice she has basically saved her own life by working around the barriers that her coverage provider is throwing up.
Fighting penny pinchers while fighting for your life. Pathetic.

Private healthcare system? NO THANKS.

That amount is peanuts compared to what we're getting for it. Our system is not perfect, nor will any system ever be. But it's pretty darn good!

Unlike most people here, I have lived in both countries and experienced both systems. I was "insured", but after $650 a month, many things are not covered, and many insurance companies just deny claims for trivial reasons. "Pre-existing condition" could mean anything.

Wanna baby? you pay $5600, UP FRONT, and God help you if that child needs to be in an incubator for a few days , $10,000+ , YOU PAY.

US health insurance is delusional. If you get really, long -term chronically sick, you are not covered, you will lose everything, your family will lose everything. *Comparing numbers covered between the two countries is not fair, because even the poorest Canadian has better health security than anyone with US health insurance.*

People need to realize why the highest age group for suicide in the US is becoming 70 and up.

A strange twist in the decision says that the new regulations are on HDTVs up to 58 inches. Most of the biggest users of power are 65 inch and larger HDTVs, yet seemingly this bill doesn't deal with those. In addition to a structural engineer needed to hang the set, 103 inch plasma sets also require a dedicated 240 AC line be installed by an electrician; yet they are somehow exempt. I can see the press releases now for the 59 inch plasmas featured at the Consumer Electronics Show this January. How much you want to bet that they use close to the same amount of energy as a comparable LCD set?

Maybe not (http://www.star-telegram.com/local_news/story/1770445.html):
---Quote---
Barbara Ann Radnofsky, a Houston lawyer and Democratic candidate for attorney general, says that a 22-word clause in a 2005 constitutional amendment designed to ban gay marriages erroneously endangers the legal status of all marriages in the state.

The amendment, approved by the Legislature and overwhelmingly ratified by voters, declares that "marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman." But the troublemaking phrase, as Radnofsky sees it, is Subsection B, which declares:

"This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status *identical or similar to marriage*."

Architects of the amendment included the clause to ban same-sex civil unions and domestic partnerships. But Radnofsky, who was a member of the powerhouse Vinson & Elkins law firm in Houston for 27 years until retiring in 2006, says the wording of Subsection B effectively "eliminates marriage in Texas," including common-law marriages.

She calls it a "massive mistake" and blames the current attorney general, Republican Greg Abbott, for allowing the language to become part of the Texas Constitution. Radnofsky called on Abbott to acknowledge the wording as an error and consider an apology. She also said that another constitutional amendment may be necessary to reverse the problem.

"You do not have to have a fancy law degree to read this and understand what it plainly says," said Radnofsky, who will be at Texas Christian University today as part of a five-city tour to kick off her campaign.
---End Quote---
I'd hate to have to defend this law in front of Scalia.

Union troubled by Eagle Scout project in Allentown (http://www.mcall.com/news/all-a8_5scout.7084728nov15,0,6238384.story)

---Quote---
In pursuit of an Eagle Scout badge, Kevin Anderson, 17, has toiled for more than 200 hours hours over several weeks to clear a walking path in an east Allentown park.

Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Union, told Allentown City Council Tuesday that the union is considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing Anderson to clear a 1,000-foot walking and biking path at Kimmets Lock Park.

Balzano said Saturday he isn't targeting Boy Scouts. But given the city's decision in July to lay off 39 SEIU members, Balzano said "there's to be no volunteers." *No one except union members may pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a walking path*.

You know, he's got a point. Think of all the stimulus money that could have been spent on this project!

Say what?? $1000/day for uncut lawn (http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/64319.html)? No way!

JUPITER — An overgrown lawn could cost a homeowner $1,000 a day.

A plan to quadruple the penalty from the current maximum of $250 per day for a first violation is scheduled for consideration at Tuesday night's town council meeting.

A repeat violation by the same person _would be boosted to $5,000 a day _maximum from $500 per day.

If the code enforcement board finds that the violation is irreversible — the unapproved removal of an historic tree, for example — the violator would face a maximum fine of $15,000. The current maximum penalty is $5,000.
---End Quote---
Thank goodness its in Florida!

Listen, I am all for requiring everyone to have to cut their grass and keep their lawn neat, but $1000 a day is outrageous IMHO! What do you think? Is $1000 a day penalty too much or not enough for not mowing the lawn?

A federal appeals court panel in Manhattan on Tuesday upheld the conviction of Lynne F. Stewart, the outspoken defense lawyer who was found guilty in 2005 of assisting terrorism by smuggling information from an imprisoned client to his violent followers in Egypt.

The three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit also ordered the trial judge to revoke Ms. Stewart’s bond, and said that she must begin serving her 28-month sentence.

The panel also sent the case back to the trial judge, John G. Koeltl of Federal District Court, to determine whether she deserved a longer sentence in light of the seriousness of her conduct and the possibility she had lied at trial. Prosecutors had sought a term of 30 years.
