Hello everyone,

I recently built a new computer and everything works great. I set up BIOS and start loading XP on my computer. The install stopped me and asked me to put in a full version of windows even though the disc I put in there is the full version. I bought the disc through my college and it has an activation key and everything. Is anyone familiar with what to do?

Thanks,

Matt

hello all, I am here now with a problem with my Girlfriends computer. She has a Dell Insperion 1525. Just a day or so ago a boot manager appears at the startup. There in only one OS here which is Vista. The machine has a 30 second time-out and it boots into Vista just fine, Malwarebytes and AVG have been run successfully with no red flags at all. There has been noone messing with the system configuration files whatsoever. The Boot manager just came out of nowhere. I have experience with boot managers before, anyone that has read my posts should know I have had as much as 2000, XP, Vista and 7 all at once on my personal machine at home. There has been NO other operating systems ever even attempted to be installed on this laptop. This boot manager came out of nowhere, I am trying to get an understanding as to how it could have been created in the Boot configuration. Does anyone have any ideas? And how safe would it be to delete it if this is caused by some kind of corruption...

Found a couple things you Windows 7 users may like.

Here (http://www.classicstartmenu.com/index.html) you can buy a utility, and here (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/2227/get-the-classic-start-menu-in-windows-7/) you can do it for free. So far to me the difference is in the free version you lose the ability to search from the start menu.

Enjoy

I tried to replace Windows XP 32 with Windows XP 64.

I reformatted the partition, ran setup, when the setup tried to reboot from the new installed system I got the apparently well known error: ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt please reinstall.

My partition is about 86MB and my computer is a multi processor Apple 2x3GHz Quad-CoreIntelXeon. I read that both large partition and multi processor can be a source of problems. I learned that ntoskrnl.exe needs to be replaced with ntkrnlmp.exe.

I booted from the CD
In the recovery console I came to this point:

COPY D:\i386\ntkrnlmp.ex_ C:\Windows\System32
CD C:\Windows\System32
REN ntoskrnl.exe ntoskrnl.exe_old
EXPAND C:\Windows\System32\ntkrnlmp.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe

The file could not be expanded.

EXPAND C:\Windows\System32\ntkrnlmp.ex_

The file could not be expanded.

C: \WINDOWS>bootcfg /rebuild

Scanning all disks for Windows installations.
Error: Failed to successfully scan disks for Windows installations.

C:\Windows>chkdsk
Volume created 11/15/09 11:05p
...

The volume appears to be in good condition and was not checked.

Still no fix.

Can anybody help me out, Please.

Hey All. I'm working on a vista machine that's got me pretty stumped. When I try to log in w/ username & password it sits on the welcome screen until I press ctrl+alt+del. It doesn't bring up the normal window that lets you log off or start task manager or whatever, it just goes on and finished loging in shortly after. Anyone seen this before?

I've disabled everything is msconfig and it still does it. It works fine in safe mode however.
