Memory- DDR2 better to fill 2 or 3 slots?

I have a Acer Aspire T180 desktop with DDR2 PC2-4200 memory. I wanted more memory than the 2-512 (totaling 1GB) and my motherboard has four slots. I purchased two 1GB Ram DDR2 PC2-5300 but upon installing them have found out that my fourth memory slot is not working. I've tried three different memory sticks in that slot and everytime the computer just beeps at me and doesn't come up.
So I am wondering what is best:
To have just the two slots with the 1GB
or to have the two 1 GB slots and a 512 in the third slot. - does that affect the DDR2 from working?

Hi
I just came to this forum and i'm sorry if this thread has already been posted but what's the difference between dual core and single core?
I'm gonna get Modern Warfare 2 soon and I have all the system requirements except for the GHz that I'm not sure about.
The requirement is 2.8 GHz dual core and my computer has 3 GHz single core. Is this going to be a problem? Thanks for any replies.

File Server CPU Recommendations?

I'm contemplating which CPU to use in a new file server... the goal is to hold them over as long as possible (shooting for 6-8 years) but keep the price as low as possible. This is for a nonprofit business with 25 PCs, which may turn into 40 PCs over the life of this new server.

Here are the roles of this server:
~Domain Server
~Exchange Server
~File Server
~Peachtree Accounting Server, 5-users
~Only server on the network

How important is it to have a Xeon, as opposed to a standard Core i7 CPU?

Are these roles affected much (noticeably) if we go with a 2.00GHz quad-core rather than a 3.00GHz quad-core CPU?

Any other thoughts or insight for me?

Thanks for your valuable input!

So im tired of my memory giving me problems and ive decided to upgrade it. Ive got 2 sticks of Corsair Dominator 2GB DDR2 1066. Today was the second time my computer wouldnt boot because I was getting memory related error messages on my handy dandy error mobo display. So after swapping my memory around back and forth it finally decided to work. I have an nvidia 780i running vista 32 bit and im looking for ideas for some quality RAM to go with next. Thanks.

Good news everyone! The mobo (680i) isn't bad (thanks to Aaron JLK for their input) - the RAM itself was shot. I've looked up compatible RAM for the board, but a lot of it is discontinued on newegg. Any suggestions for a 4 GB set would be appreciated.

So my sigs got the details. I've got the chip cranked up to 3.99ghz @ 1.275v
The ram is underclocked to 1520mhz (it lets me pick either that or something around 1800).
I managed to get booted at 4.2 and 1.3v with the ram at 1650mhz.
I didn't want to go above the 1.3v level, but I do think that I could get her steady with a higher voltage, but I also don't want to sacrifice the long life span.
And the temps. Right now I am running at 40-45 idle, and up to 75 peak load. Is that too hot, and what should I try to go for?

The ram is underclocked to 1520mhz (it lets me pick either that or something around 1800).

...since it is the weakest part of my rig ( Phenom II X2 545 @ 3.0 Ghz)

If I wanted to upgrade to a Phenom X4 955 @ 3.2Ghz Black edition. What steps would I take before and after replacing the processor?

Processor Fan/Heatsink Compatability

Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103714)

Planning to buy this processor as part of a bundle soon, but it doesn't come with a fan/heatsink. Trying to find one that is compatible.

Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 92mm Fluid Dynamic CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134)

One example I found. The only connection I found is that its compatible with AM3 processors, but im not positive what else is needed to know.

Can you recommend a Fan+Heatsink to use with this processor, and whether or not Newegg provides any kind of assembly possibility?

AMD Phenom II still limited to 2 slots only??

Hey guys,

when I bought the Phenom II X3, I heard about the fact that they had a small bug that would only be active when you use more then 1 ram slot per ram channel, as in occupy all 4 slots.

Is this still valid?? Has this been fixed with bios updates for mobo's?? I want to upgrade ram, but need to know if I can add another 4GB or need to buy 2 x 4GB new.

Thanks for any info.

I have an EliteGroup mainboard, RC410L/800-M, it can accept a dual core processor. I'm currently using a Celeron D 3.3 GHz processor, with 1Gig RAM already in place. Yeah, I'll get more RAM some day, but the CPU gets upgraded first.

- Will this be a simple matter of matching CPU clock speed and socket?

-And where, in Intels current website, do I get the simplest explanation of which retail 'box' to order?

TIA...
