I am installing Vista on a new 320 gig WD drive. On setup, the drive is not recognized, and gives me the options to install drivers for it. How do I do this and where are they? I would have to burn them to cd or install on my ext. drive to install. It gives me a browse option, but I dont know where to look or what they are called. Please advise. thanks

FreeAgent drive software not x64 compatible

So as some of you might know the Seagate FreeAgent backup drive software (I have a 1TB running through FireWire) isn't compatible with a 64bit operating system. I run Windows XP x64 on my home work PC and I have my 1TB drive which I usually set the software to look at specific folders and it backs them up. Well when I went to install the software that came on the HDD it said its not compatible with the OS. So then I go onto Google and look around and it doesn't take long to see others are pissed that their software doesn't install/work with a 64bit OS.

I want a program that will run when the PC boots and constantly looks at the folders I tell it to and backs them up whenever anything changes to the 1TB drive. I don't want to have to remember to open a program and hit sync (which is what I was trying with FreeByte and it still didnt even work). Preferably something that runs well or is designed for a 64bit operating system would be great. Preferably Free, but if I need to pay a little for a decent program I will since it's crucial to my work (photography).

Suggestions/Thoughts?

Just added a brand new 320 gig WD drive to the computer. Now sure how to have it configured. Old drive shows up as Primary Master, and CD/DVD drive shows up as Secondary Master. Is there any particular way I should have it set up when either doing a drive clone or installing a fresh install of my Vista OS? Also, on a brand new drive, is there anything on it thats needs to stay? In disk management, says I have to "intitialize" the drive before it will show up in My Computer. Will this destroy any files that came on the drive or is is completey blank now? Thanks

I hope this is in the right forum; would it possible for me to put a SATA optical drive (DVD RW in particular) on my motherboard i.e. Asus P5S MX SE? I was originally using an IDE HP Combo Drive, but am thinking of replacing it. So, is it possible to swap, switch, change etc. the IDE plug/sockets to SATA or does my mobo have it?

I have plugged the old hard drive into an external hard drive case and connected it to my computer via usb.

Have a Seagate Barracuda 500 GB that is in the process of failing.

I started copying files off of it and got about 60 gigs in when it stopped transferring. Seatools couldn't complete a test but it did let me know that the drive had once been over 70C. I tried retesting with the drive cooling to ~20C and it gets 90% through and stalls each time.

So assuming the damage is thermal; which is more likely affected, the platters or the rest of the drive?

There is no way I can afford to have the rest of the data recovered so I'd be up to swapping the platters into a new drive.

Any other way to try to extract files from an unfailed yet gimped as all get out drive?

thanks

FAT32 to NTFS file system in Win2kpro

Fellow Members:

My goal is to consolidate *data from _multiple_ FAT32 formatted ["source"] HDDs to a couple of NTFS formatted ["target"] HDDs. All HDDs and data involved in this "endeavor" are from *computers running Win2KPro*. [***Documents, MP3s & photos]

I searched the TechIMO archives and read the threads of other members who had asked how to convert FAT32 partitioned data to NTFS formated partitions.

The threads devoted to this topic proved educational. However, given the age and variance of the archived information, I feel compelled to run this by fellow members yet one more time.

In order to convert a _FAT32_ volume to an _NTFS_ file system in Win2KPro or in WinXP [according to what I've read], one can utilize *Convert.exe*, aka the *"Convert Command."*

For examble, to convert data on FAT32 partition "E" to a NTFS file system on the same partition, I would:

1. Click Start > Run > *CMD* > OK.

2. Type *CONVERT E: /FS:NTFS*. Press Enter.

However, as I indicated above, my goal is to transfer the "converted file system" data to a different HDD. . . a HDD that has already been set up with a NTFS file system. *This leads me to the following question:*

Can I simply copy & paste or otherwise transfer files from the _FAT32_ volume to a NTFS partition on a different HDD, *_without_ first converting the FAT32 "source" volume*? Or, _must I first convert_ the FAT32 volume _before_ I can transfer, i.e., copy & paste its contents to a different HDD with a NTFS file system?

I sense that I'll first have to convert _then_ transfer the data, but no harm in checking the availability of a shortcut.

Thx, Brangwen

Hey guys,

I have a hard drive that so far has not been repairable. After trying to access the drive under both Linux and Windows, I have determined that the MFT is bad, as that is the error that Windows CHKDSK gave me. CHKDSK attempted to repair the MFT, but was unsuccessful. Also unsuccessful was Testdisk, it simply said the MFT and the MFTmirror are bad.
Does anyone know of a way/program that repairs the MFT?

Thanks as always.
