A Mario Kart game on a Nintendo console is about as unexpected as Peach being kidnapped by Bowser, but that doesn't make the arrival of Mario Kart Wii any less exciting. Anyone old enough to remember the SEGA vs Nintendo War will likely have fond memories of at least one Mario Kart game, even if the GameCube's Double Dash didn't really live up to the series' strong heritage. With more than a little to prove, Nintendo has really gone to town with its Wii entry in the series, with features that will please hardcore gamers and newcomers alike. But has this resulted in a halfway house of a racing game or arcade racing perfection?

Driving games come in all shapes and sizes, and everyone has their favourites, some go for the realism of games like Gran Turismo and Forza, some prefer the sheer unadulterated speed of games like Burnout or F Zero, hell even some like the tedious repetition of the Need for Speed games. But there’s no denying everyone has got their favourite, and it’s no surprise that the majority of people's favourites is Mario Kart in some form or another. So as we welcome the latest iteration of the classic racer into our homes and our lives the big question is, is it the same Mario Kart that we’ve all come to love over the years?

One may wonder why Nintendo would add motorcycles and dirt bikes to the game series that popularized, if not invented, the genre of weapons-based go-kart racing. If you're one of the fans who balked at the inclusion of two-wheeled vehicles, a midair stunt system, and motion controls, rest assured that despite these changes, Mario Kart Wii is still very much the game that you have come to love over the years. But even if you haven't been on the receiving end of a blue shell before, the extensive multiplayer options, deeply integrated online functionality, multitude of controller schemes available, and simple gameplay make this latest Mario Kart great fun and quite possibly the most accessible one ever.

Played the game over a friend's apartment earlier today. I was pleasantly surprised. The Wheel took a little while to get used to but had much better response than what I was expecting. I also love the inclusion of updated original levels from previous systems.

Fifteen years since it first crossed the finish line, Nintendo’s addictive, arcadey kart-racing series is still the one to beat. Without straying far from its reliable formula, the beloved franchise hits the Wii with an all-new entry that should appeal to veteran Karters and newcomers alike. The expected modes, tracks, robust character selection and crazy power-ups are back, and complemented by the best Wii internet-based multiplayer experience to date. In fact, you’ll likely forego the off-line solo offerings after a few days in favor of the wildly fun online modes.
