| Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (PS3) Reviews Quote:
PS3 owners have had every reason to feel owned by their 360 playing counterparts. Microsoft's box has been getting a steady stream of top-shelf games, while the PS3 has been the recipient of lesser games and lesser versions of multiplatform releases. Gran Turismo 5 should change all that. It's the first next-gen version of gaming's premier racing series. The bad news is that it won't be out for a year or so. The good news is that just like with GT4, Sony and Polyphony Digital have released a preview version. Gran Tursimo 5 Prologue may seem like an overgrown demo at times and the $39 price tag may seem high for what you're getting, but if you're a fan of the series -- or racing in general -- it's definitely worth picking up.

But Gran Turismo 5: Prologue presents us with a set of much more challenging philosophical conundrums: Is it a game? Is it a demo? Is it shameless consumer abuse? Figuring out exactly “what it is” can feel like an exercise in existential phenomenology. However, I can assure you, this is a full game, complete unto itself. Only when compared to other Gran Turismo games might this title seem lacking in content. It’s got more vehicle and course selections than Motorstorm, more robust online features than DIRT, and more variability in its physics models than Forza 2.

I really want to like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, but every time I warm up to it another aspect of it beats me down. I keep coming back hoping it gets better only to go away battered by design stupidity again and again. There's still a great series in here trying desperately to find its way 10 years after the original was released, but Prologue is just so unbalanced and riddled with problems that you're better off waiting and hoping the real Gran Turismo 5 will arrive next year.

Driving the cars is a dream and is so much more fun and rewarding than Pro Street is. Each car has its own distinct feel and is modeled accurately on the real car. Hop in a front drive car and it handles just like a front wheel drive is supposed to. Get in a rear wheel drive car and it reacts just as it should.

Gran Turismo has been known mainly for two things. The level of detail put to the different car models in the games and the precision of the driving mechanics. Visually Gran Turismo 5 Prologue runs at a silky smooth 60 FPS and 1080p HD (30 FPS for replays). There is no equivalent in my opinion to what Polyphony Digital accomplished with this game. It's a true work of art. Since this is GT 5 PROLOGUE, you won't get the 500 cars and 30 tracks you're used to get from the previous games but you still get 70+ cars and 6 tracks that have some variations to them which gives a total of around 7-8 different tracks. Everything looks really sharp from the detail on the asphalt to the swiss alps in the background.

Gran Tourismo is a beautiful game, that handles really well
So far the races are pretty challenging.
There's one you MUST have the one car that is allowed, and you start in 16th place.. you have to get to the top 3 places in ONE lap (Daytona track).
Ya gotta get some good drafting going, otherwise you dont have a chance
I can't get past 2nd place |

$40 for a demo?
I wonder how much the full thing will cost. |
