Crytek Cryengine 3 Intros New Lighting Technique

Game development firm Crytek demonstrated a new lighting technique utilized by its Cryengine 3 rendering engine during last week's SIGGRAPH 2009 convention.

Crytek shows during the "Advanced Real-time Rendering Course" at SIGGRAPH 2009 their improved lighting technique used in CryEngine 3. The new technique is called Light Propagation Volumes and it is used for Global Illumination and Massive Lighting, both which improve the lighting quality according to Crytek.

Here's some video's of the new engine.

To be honest, I'm not real impressed. I was looking forward to a huge leap, like there was from cryengine 1 to 2.
But as long as it doesn't take 3 GPU's to max out the game, I'll be happy.
(by the looks of the videos, it won't either)

    I think it looks awesome.

Well according to the vids those video's where rendered in directX 9.0c, Im sure if it was DX10 it would look much better and really kill those frames.

I'm not saying it doesn't look good, obviously there are no other games that look as good as that. I was just expecting a larger jump then what it was, that's all..
Think about Far Cry, then Far Cry 2, HUGE jump in graphics. Now compare that to this... not nearly as much of a jump...
But again, it still looks good.

keep in mind there was about 3.5 to 4.5 years between Far Cry and Crysis/Far Cry 2. (not factoring in the year or two before that, that we had been hearing about the original CryEngine and all its glory, like we are now about #3)

now their showing enhancements in the new game engine only 2 years after Crysis' CryEngine 2 was released.

But agreed with the comment as long as it doesn't need 3 GPU's to run fully at respectable Frame rates, that would suck all over again.

Hmmm, maybe nvidia would allow 3 or 4 way card SLI with Dual GPU cards then LOL? (imagine people plopping down for 3 or 4 GTX 295's or its successors?, plus a 6 Core i7 or Phenom II? )

seriously though, I remember the absurdity with review sites running 1200W PSU's and 3 8800GTX/Ultra cards to get a mere 30-40 fps in Crysis fully maxed.

here it is 2 years later and my i7 920, with 3GB DDR3 and a single GTX 285 can run it in some areas of the game in the high 50-60's (as low as upper 20's) in DX10 64-bit mode, with everything set to High, and 4x AA easily.

I know this thread is old but, it looks to me like this game won't be so hard on the system, theyre releasing it for PS3, 360 as well, PS3 is using a cell with a modified geforce 7900, 360 is using a xenon with an ATI equivilent, if those can run this game then i'm sure our quad cores, loads of ram, and dual GPU's can do it easily.

Indeed.... But those console's can't run it in DX10, also I imagine it will have low-med settings at 30fps......

True, but i remember reading somewhere that this engine takes advantage of multi-cores multi-gpu in a way the others didn't.

I can't wait for it to come out. I'm hoping it puts a great work out on my PC

Well, we all that general speaking a console can't match wits with a higher-end pc, the pc has a much stronger rendering ability.
The big issue really is that a console is one system set in a specific way, which means games can be designed to make the best use of all components. Whereas with pc games, you can only design for general things (ati or nvidia, intel or amd, 2gb ram or 4gb, etc.). There are a lot of variables in the pc games market. So what happens, you get a console (say the 360), which has drastically lower performance than a pc, but the game ends of looking about the same, but the console's resources are being more efficiently realized.
Part of the reason the performance in games can increase with new gfx driver releases.

And I think the video looks pretty good, especially because it is more geared to showing object lighting, as opposed to object detail. The cry-engine is really the best out and I am glad to see that they are still pushing it, even if they aren't making the bigger leaps like before (but seriously, where would they go?).
Reason obeys itself; and ignorance does whatever is dictated to it.
