| Microsoft confirms 802.11n adapter for Xbox 360
From Ars Technica: Quote: |
The Xbox 360 is getting a much faster 802.11n wireless adapter, though when, and for how much, remains to be seen.
| This is a much needed and way late product update. With the update in their dashboard came games on demand. Downloading a couple of gigs is one thing but having to do it over G, thats just asking us to suffer. Glad they are updating their product line finally! |

Im pretty sure most home users are limited by their internet connections than their wireless network. |

| Begs the question: Is your internet connection faster than 54mbs? |

In America, FIOS from Verizon is the only one that really stands out when it comes to offering a 50/20 (their highest tier) internet connection for consumers. But its really expensive and very limited to who can get it right now. This N adapter might be useful down the road, but I wouldn't be running off and purchasing one unless the G connection in your place sucks because of other people's wireless. Plus N just became an official standard in the past month? Granted Pre-N stuff has been out and not much has changed, but still I dont see the cost benefit if you already have the G wireless adapter (Unless you have a huge amount of wireless clients cutting the bandwidth way down on the G network!) |

N would be useful if you have to use wireless and you get very poor reception where you currently have it.
Though it would be much better to just buy another wireless router and have it act as a bridge. |

MAYBE remotely useful if using it as a media server, but even then not likely to be pushing the limits of standard wireless B/G
waste of money

They built too fast, too far and now are not able to provide the level of service they promised.
That said, they are not the only ones offering high speeds of that caliber. Check this article for instance ...
From Comcasts listing for my area ... Quote:
Extreme 50 - Downloads up to 50Mbps, uploads up to 10Mbps with PowerBoostŪ.
| Getting 50/10 isnt that hard nowadays... And comcast only charges 100 a month for that! Ratification happened this month, like a couple of weeks ago. How long do you think it would take for you to go through 600 pages of documentation with an entire board of engineers and scientists nitpicking the entire document though? Its basically been done for years.
Last point ... The biggest problem with G is that if you dont have a MIMO router and a MIMO adapter, your speed is slow as it is. Half Duplex is not the standard they should have started with. I am almost certain that the G adapter is not MIMO, slower speeds caused by it being half duplex. Your also not thinking about the fact that you can transfer files from your MCE/Vista/7 computer to the Xbox ... Which means the speeds are not just dependant on your internet speeds. All the MP3's you have ... the thousands or 10s of thousands still take time to upload and save on the Xbox. Pushing TV from your MCE to your Xbox is still slow over G. |
