Valve once said that the theft also allowed the hackers to obtain the way that Steam validates CD Keys. I read it somewhere. Aparently they had to change the whole coding in order to make sure that nobody was getting a free ride.

At least thats my understanding of the situation.

not for the cheats, this is the real story why people get or get the source codes, so they can give it away for free and modified some code for those people who cant afford to buy a registered copy of half life2.
this hackers/crackers do this for fun while other do this to take down company's profits.
if valve did this for press realeses this is not a good sign for them. they just made those hackers/crackers curius.

Valve is just taking the scape goat route! Those loosers wouldnt be done with it by now REGARDLESS of the theft. LOL they dont make cd protection OR cd key generators. Other co's specialise in JUST that area. You dont reinvent the wheel when you already have a good one. They outsource that work like everyother software co does. He stole my crayons- "you have antoehr box" yes but it delayed my work(picture) cause that indigo was a very certain shade of indigo no other indigo crayon matches. Thats just as reasonable as their claims. CAUSE no matter the keygen no matter the copy protection (which is outsourced again) it will be cracked day 1 it hits the shelves. The hackers that do it for fun-do just that. And strive at it. Those that do it for work-its work. Big diff in the level of commitment and interest. The guys having fun-will keep doing so and keep breaking what the paid guys did for both pat on back (reward) and besting the other guy who is supposed to be better so to speak. Long story shortend this is one HUGE ruse.(sp?)

I was at E3, and still don't know! Valve wasn't giving many details out... If they did, I do believe it's to purely mess with their fans some more.
