Does anyone have any tips or tricks to increase FPS?
I just bought a GeForce 6800 GT OC and the performance isnt what i had hoped for.
My system specs:
Pentium IV 2.8 800mhz FSB 1 meg cache
1 Gig pc 3200 ram
Windows Xp Home
GeForce 6800 GT OC
I've been playing all games in 1200 x 768 resolution, with most settings turned on, except anti-alaising.
In older games like UT2004 i get around 30 FPS.
In Pain Killer i get about 30.
World of Warcraft gives me about 25.
Doom 3 around 20.
Ive been looking at a bunch of benchmark tests, where systems very similiar to mine were used.
Now i know bench mark tests do have somewhat of a bullshit factor, but still their tests show extremely higher FPS then what i'm getting.
Anyone have any ideas as to what i could do to improve this? |

If you upgraded from a Radeon it's possible that there are still conflicting ATI driver remnants that you must clean out. Also make sure your card isn't running in PCI mode and that you have the latest drivers installed.

In Device Manager check the properties of your display adapter. |

Hi,
I only really know ATI, but your frame rates do seem a little low for your specs.
I would suggest a good thing to start with is to download 3DMark2001 and 3DMark2003 from madonion, and use the results to compare with other people's systems that have the same graphics card and processor.
I wouldn't get too worried if your scores seem low compared to the max people get on the madonion site cos some people spend all thier time tweaking just to get high scores. Just look on these forums, especially the benchmark one, and check scores.
Once you have established a reasonable target, start fixing your system up.
Note:
I believe 3DMark2003 is 160MB, but 2001 is much smaller.
Also.....don't get too hung up on benchmarking, it's not good for you.
Here's a link for 3D2001 in case you want to go for it http://www.futuremark.com/products/3dmark2001/ |

if its ati driver removal problem, ati have a ati removal utility available from their site.
some games run best on a newly rebooted machine. also you exit all av + background stuff eg realdownload?
you say you've been benchmarking, so i guess you know what you're doing.
were you results before you upgraded what you would have expected them to be? or too low for similar cards?
are you comparing your results with the very highest, or being a little more realistic?
run dxdiag + check for problems there.
as mentioned above, check in device manager, only your card listed? no yellow exclamation marks?
download SANDRA diagnostic/benchmark/system info prog (google it) and do a performance check. dont always believe results, but can be helpful a lot of the time. |

Its displayed correctly in my device manager, no yellow ! or anything.
I have the newest drivers.
I have very few processes running, i've even disabled unneeded services using the guide on blackviper.com.
I didnt own an ATI card before this so ATI driver removal isnt the problem.
And as far as comparing scores, i think i'm being reasonable.
Most benchmarks show about 80 Fps for Pain Killer.... i'd be expected around 50, and i'm getting like 30, so i know something has to be wrong. |

Well the semi simple cureall would be a reformat. That would take care of anything old that may cause problems and it would probably give your system a general speedup overall. |
