Diablo 3!!!

DIABLO 3!!! Gamespot has a mention of Diablo III in their Rumor Control column this week. D3 is addressed in the last item on the page, so go here and scroll down. The rumor is prompted by the Lead Game Designer job opening newly-posted on Blizzard's site. As numerous readers have observed in emails to us, that job listing seems to all but openly ask for someone to come and lead the Diablo III design team. As the Gamespot Rumor Control points out though, there is no actual mention of Diablo 3, Blizzard won't confirm or deny the issue, and they've never made any public announcement of Diablo III yet. Gamespot calls this rumor "probably not bogus" but like the rest of us, they can't say anything for sure at this time.

For a splash of reality, even if this is for Diablo III, don't start holding your breath. Virtually everyone from the creative teams that designed D1, D2, and D2X have since left the company (which is why they have to try and hire someone new to do it) and even if they were working on D3 now, if they're still at the "hire a project lead" stage, you're looking at years and years before the game hits the market. For comparison, consider that D2 was announced more than 4 years before it finally was released, and they certainly had their entire design team on staff and working on it for years before making the announcement.
