Random Spikes in games

Hey all, I have this small problem when playing a game like Guild Wars or GTA: SA on my comp. I get these really random spikes, I'll be moving around then all of a sudden I start glitching like crazy. I thought it was lag at first, then graphics set too high, I thought something was wrong with my screen. But none of those seem to cause it. Could it be my video card is heating up? I have decent cooling in my PC so I would like to think its not that, but if it is how can I check the temp and how can i fix this problem? Thanks

sound strange, like most pc problems. My hunch is that it is temp releated. I have to check my cpu temp in the bios but i can check my gpu temp in the nvidia utility. i think everest has that feature.

I use the Asus Probe but all i can get on that is the CPU and MB temps. I checked them after I played Guild Wars and the temps were only 100 F, and around 80 when I started.
