| Q3 and pop ups
aight guys, this is getting quite annoying. Im playing q3 and a pop up comes up in the middle of the screen (taking the focus off of q3) and leaving me to x it out. After that Q3's colors and stuff look strange (like there not in FS mode) and i cant stand it its happened almost everytime i get the flag and run it back and it pops up and i get fragged! help me out plz -- tia -- chris
ps i have hijack this, ran it, and it says no immediate threats, and system restore is off (is it a good thing to just leave SR off for good, cuz i have index service off all the time) -- thnx |

Here's what I generally do to remove spyware:
First step to removing spyware is to go to your "add remove programs" and remove all the ones that are listed on there.
reboot
Then I run MSCONFIG and make sure no spyware programs are loading, if there are, I uncheck them.
reboot
Next step is to run several different spyware apps. I generally run MS AntiSpyware, Adaware, and SpyBot. I also run hijackthis.
reboot
Most of the time, those procedures are enough to get rid of spyware. I have come accross a few instances where certain spyware programs just kept coming back. What I ended up doing is removing the drive and hooking it up as a slave on a clean system. I then run Norton AntiVirus on it, which surprisingly is really good at finding and removing files associated with spyware. Some files it can't delete so I just go in and delete them manually. After thats done I put the drive back into the original system and all is well.

If you're running XP the pop-ups may be caused by the messenger service. To disable it, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Scroll down to "Messenger", right click it and select Properties. Under Startup Type select "Disabled" then stop the service under "Service Status". Click Apply > OK and you should be good to go. |

if he is running service pack 1 (he should be at least running 1) it disables MS messenger by default
Or a decent firewall will stop messenger spam (if this is what his problem is) |
