Cs Lag (Need some opinions)
Ok my friend has a 400 celeron with a voodoo 3 3000 pci. When he is on some maps he lags. He has 320mb of sdram. Do you think it is just time to upgrade to a different computer or shoud\ld a 400 celeron with these specs run cs good enough? The maps he lags on are storm and chateu

The reason he lags is that he needs a better CPU / graphics card and a new viceo card wouldn't hurt.
I bet he lags on Survior as well as any jeep maps probably as well. The technical reason for this is becasue CS pro-loads every texture on teh map, not just the ones in sight, so when you get on those really big detailed maps it really bogs your computer down like mad.

And what about a PIII 500 with a TNT2 Ultra lagging in Unreal? Does "...that computer totaly hurts.." too, Dude?

MMock,
What resolution is he running?
Try a lower one,Also on one of the menus there is a setting for"decals" set it low,aka 50, or to 0.
Turn off "high quality" models, turn off "high quality" sound
Try the "WickedGL" drivers, search google for "wickedGL".
Make sure he runs the 3dfxGL drivers(in the game menu) not the default ones
Also there are console/cfg commands to turn off ingame downloads (sprays and such)and uploads(your custom spray)

See at one time I don't think he exsperienced lag at all! But now he gets it more often then ever! The Poor guy is trying to get a loan for a new pc but I dont think it is gonna happen. I got a 533 sitting around collecting dust do you think this would be much better?

If he wants a quick fix...get a new video card
I play Half Life against a few guys who have slow (500mhz) machines and they kick butt, but they all at least have a g-force 256(first g-force),these cards take a lot of load off of the cpu

What OS is he running? I had a friend who tried CS on windows ME and it took at least two tries to connect to any game, every time!! He reinstalled 98 and hasn't had a problem since...
I have 98se, P3 500, 256MB, diamond viper 2 32mb w/cable connection and it holds fine for me! In heavy action framerates can drop to 20ish but it's never effected my playing, rates might get low, but never gets choppy for me. When walking/running around I usually hold 50-60 which IMO is fine...
oh, thats at 800x600 btw...
g'luck!

Best bet is to invest in a Good vid card w/a decent amount of on-board memory. Increasing system memory helps loads too, especially since system memory is so cheap.
To really test your system, run UT with Second Space Beacon. Its huge when outside and can hurt even a decent machine.

Are you two sharing off of one cable modem? If so, is there any file-sharing apps running on either computer when lag is experienced? I noticed a ping jump of about 400-500msWe both got a killer cable connection
in CS when my roomate had morpheus going with sharing enabled!! As soon as one or two people started dnlding from him it would completely kill my ping!! Normally I hold around 70 - 90ms!! Then, when the roomies comp is shutdown or sharing is disabled, my ping returns to normal...
just a thought... something to look into...
cyas!

I think the Voodoo is the best he can do for the moment!Best bet is to invest in a Good vid card w/a decent amount of on-board memory. I would suggest the WickedGL drivers already mentioned or lowering the resolution!boo!

It's probably highly rated because of the level of violence. The story is decent.
