I just sent a detailed message to EA about this very issue. Interestingly, it is not in their FAQ's ( at least not directly related to this specific error ). Hopefully they will reply with a real answer.
I'm sitting on a freshly formatted, installed and updated WinXP system that ran it the first time I installed the game. Now, no matter which way I try, it will not reinstall, and I get the same error message.
The problem is, I have 2 copies of the game, they both do the same thing. I've copied the files to the HDD per the FAQ and get the exact same error from a HDD install.
You go figure THAT one out EA's support is pretty much garbage IMHO.
My latest queary into this install issue was to kill all background services listed under my user name in the task manager.
This is what I get everytime. |

Did you try "cursing" at the computer for an extended period of time? Or mayb hitting it? I feel that even if that doesnt solve the problem- it makes you feel better. |

I just started getting that exact "failed to install" message since i reformatted and tried to install BF2 (cd-rom version) on windows 7. Fails like that at the exact same spot right after putting in disc #2. I also have 2 seperate copies of BF2 Cd-Rom, one of which has quite a few scratches on it and the other is nearly brand new. Does the same thing everytime, never had a problem on winXP. |

I made a copy of the disc and swapped it during the install. That seemed to work for me.
