Diablo 2 LOD Help
I want to play online with my little brother (both expansion characters) at the same time at home. I was wondering if that required my purchasing of another expansion disc, or both another diablo 2 and diablo 2 LOD discs
if so, are there any alternatives around this?
also, how would lan work?
thanks in advance

To play online you will definetively need a copy of Diablo II and the Expansion LOD...
Remember that they have CD keys, so each time you go online, it check what cd key is in use, if it in use, then the second that tries the same cd key wont go online.
You can play Lan Games with the same cd key tought, but you still need to have the cd rom inside to be able to play forcing you to having a copy of at least the expansion.

ok, so then I can play lan with only buying the expansion cd?

yes you can, just copy the disk (or create an image on you HD and mount it on a virtual driver)
should work, never tried it
else there is program called D2-Loader, it should be able to load D2 without the CD
but be aware it's not allowed to play with online and there can be some d2 loaders which have trojans or other fun stuff to ruin your PC or steal your CD key

Should be able to. In fact, you might be able to load the game up on one computer, take out the CD then load it up on the other computer if it is strictly for LAN gaming. Not sure if this will actually work but its worth a try. I know it works on some games. Since it is in your own home and you already own a copy of it i don't really see any ethical issues in doing this.Gi | Yuu | Jin | Rei | Makoto | Meiyo | Chuugi

I remember that for Diablo II you didnt need the to had the cd inside, if you did the full install..
But for the expansion it checks the cd if its inside every now an then during the game... at least that happened, I dont know if something changed in the last patch..
You can try wont hurt.
You can try Alcohol 120% and make and image of the expansion cd, then use daemon tools to mount that image and load the game.

the problem with LOD is, for example when you kill schenke (donnu how to write that guy in english)
for the first time, it loads something from the CD (the short lag you might noticed once)
so the cd has to be in the driver while playing,
but as override said, it's worth a try maybe it really works
EDIT k washe was faster ;P

Also, if you make an image w/ Alcohol 120% you dont need daemon tools to mount the image. Alcohol has built in capabilities to do it.
Edit: Also, do a full install on both computers. That way you won't have to use the CD for cinematic loading as washe said.

Diablo II + LOD + Warcraft III + FT, and all other blizzard cds cannot be made into image. Oh trust me. I know.

Me ,my brother, and my friend play a lot over a lan and we just made an image of the Expansion cd, then use virtual drives to mount it and then we can play fine.

You need to use the correct profile in Alcohol 120% and do it the slowest speed possible.. I think Diablo II and LOD uses securom 4...
There is an application that escapes the name now, gives you what copy protection is using, in Alcohol you can set it on a box below when you create the image.
Also in daemon tools site there is a huge games database...
Heck I made a perfect working image of FEAR!
And I said use daemon tools so you can use their Securom emulation to be able to load the game correctly!
Disclaimer: The use of above method is not supported by the community or blizzard, so unless you are using only on your copy of the game is ok, the good folks of blizzard work very hard in every game, at least we need to support good companies, Diablo 2 and LOD is pretty cheap now.
Before I get flamed I have to use that method so I dont need to shuffle cd every time someone played the game..

cool thanks for the many options as to how to do this
unfortunately, I'm not too computer literate, so which do you think would be best?
also, is d2loader allow for lan play?
August 21st, 2006, 06:47 PM #18
yeah sure, d2 loader is just forbidden for online playing (well actually it's not really forbidden but it is considered wrong and blizzard may ban you for using it)
not really sure how this works with d2 loader^^
oh and we wont flame you just because you safe copy your CDs =)
i always use NO CD patches if possible to play every game without looking for those stupid CDs =)

nice, everything is working fine
thanks everyone for the positive and helpful input
alas, my brother cannot connect to this server
all our spyware, virus, firewall, protection, etc. is off
this computer is on high speed, but the other is on wireless, with a horribly low connection
any idea how to improve the speed, or should I try another area of the forum
thanks again everyone

You can try in the networking forum..
Most wireless issues are bound to network range, so my first approach would be find another place for the router or computer so they are closer.
