| Euro PS3 losing some Backwards Combatibility Quote:
Sony missed its simultaneous worldwide launch plans for PlayStation 3, and once again Europe's getting the short end of the gaming stick. Sony Computer Entertainment announced that Europe's PS3 will be slightly modified from other regions, with the side effect of being not entirely backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 software.
A Sony press release states that Europe's PS3 "embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation titles and a limited range of PlayStation 2 titles." Sony received criticism when PS3 first launched in Japan when consumers discovered that not all PS2 games ran on the new system.
"PS3 is first and foremost a system that excels in playing games specifically designed to exploit the power and potential of the PS3 system," said SCEE President David Reeves in the press release. "Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology."
Why that focus has removed functionality away from Europe's PS3 is anyone's guess. Sony said the company will be able to increase the number of compatible titles over time through software updates via the internet or PS3 game discs. The new specifications also apply to the Middle East, Africa and Australasia markets.
